Expert Analysis
Ty Xanders | Prep Lacrosse Scout
Another superbly gifted QB, Ortlieb has been the straw that stirs the Friars’ drink for three years now, bursting onto the scene by racking up 49 goals and 25 assists as a sophomore. He’s highly dangerous with the ball, able to beat his man off the end line or set up his teammates with beautiful feeds, but he also doesn’t need the rock to be successful, evidenced by his sneaky and precise off-ball prowess. Early in the season against a grueling schedule, Ortlieb showed off the ability to feed teammates for doorstep dunks and provide the finishing himself, displaying soft hands around the net. He’ll address an area of need when he arrives in Durham, with the Blue Devils set to graduate a pair of fifth-years at attack.

Ortlieb started the game with an assist to Turley, but it came at a cost. Loyola’s defender,

, delivered a hard (but legal) slide that would make defensive coordinators smile. Those are the types of hits coaches love, as they can set the tone for the game. However, Ortlieb didn’t let it affect his performance. The five-star attackman showcased his versatility by scoring in a variety of ways: in the hang-up game, from the island, and by cutting from the crease position. The highlight of Ortlieb’s day came with a high-IQ off-ball cut and an underhand shovel finish. He finished with three goals and two assists.

is and what he did. The righty from Malvern was Sunday’s star of the show, scoring five goals. Ortlieb showed great range in his game being a multifaceted threat all day. When behind the goal he served as the team’s quarterback, dodging off the end line or setting up the offense. He also shined as an extremely dangerous off-ball threat with the combination of great field sense and accurate finishing truly shined. Whether it was following the slide or getting lost in transition, Ortlieb consistently made the defense pay. With two goals late in the game, he was able to ice the game for the Friars. The Duke-bound junior will have the keys to the offense for one more year before heading off to Durham.
