Mad Dog Lacrosse has grown from a small summer camp on the Jersey Shore into one of the most respected national programs in the sport. Founded in 2006 by brothers Tommy and Bill Duerr, the program began as a humble day camp in Sea Girt, New Jersey, driven by their shared love for the game and a desire to teach it the right way. For four summers, Mad Dog NJ Camps became a Shore staple, drawing elite coaches and college players through the Duerr brothers' connections.

By 2015, the program had launched its first official club teams, marking the start of Mad Dog's transformation from a local camp to a full-scale developmental system. Six years later, in 2021, the club celebrated a significant milestone, its first class of college recruits. Since then, Mad Dog's reach has expanded nationwide, with regional “feeding” programs including Mad Dog East (NJ), Mad Dog West (California), Texas Stangs (Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio), Mad Dog Illinois, Colorado Kings, Texas Nationals, and Cityside (Washington).

When Tom Duerr, a Johns Hopkins graduate, assumed full leadership in 2010, the vision sharpened. Under his guidance, Mad Dog developed into a national-level organization offering travel teams, leagues, and clinics for boys and girls. Today, the brand's hallmark is consistency, elite coaching, top-tier player development, and a “Mad Dog mentality” centered around effort, discipline, and passion for the game.

The club's mission statement says it best: “To provide a one-of-a-kind lacrosse experience by creating a positive learning environment combined with high-level instruction fueled by a passion for the game and life itself.”

Mad Dog's rise has been reflected in its rapidly growing alumni base. The 2021 class featured the first wave of blue-chip recruits, Reed Landin (Duke), Casey Mulligan (Penn), Conor Spagnoli (Towson), Ryan Croddick (Princeton), Tynan Walsh (Penn), and Owen Gaffney (Harvard).

That group set the tone for the years that followed. The 2022 class included Zach Friedman (Princeton), Logan Ip (Harvard), and Julian Jenkins (Holy Cross).

The 2023 class continued the trend with Ben Beacham (Penn), Brett Koopman (UNC), Jack Stahl (Princeton), and Gabe Sorichetti (Johns Hopkins).

By 2024, Mad Dog had evolved into a recruiting powerhouse, placing Brooks Rodger (UNC), Luke Macaluso (UNC), Luke Stickler (Notre Dame), Austin Hicks (Duke), Beau Hokinson (Princeton), Sean Browne (UVA), Sean Magoto (Ohio State), Beck Mahoney (Cornell), and Christian Buck (Yale).

The 2025 class maintained that elite standard with Brock Getson (Harvard), Caswell Friedman (UNC), Henry Casani (UNC), Parker Sorensen (Johns Hopkins), and Brady Kezelman (Manhattan).

The 2026 class, led by Mad Dog Head of Collegiate Recruiting Aedan Herman, ended their club lacrosse journey as the number five-ranked national team in North America, and they have already drawn national attention for their depth, athleticism, and maturity on the field. Several players from this group have emerged as key contributors at the high school level. Players like Gabriel James (Ohio State), Max Bushaw (Notre Dame), Jackson Bond (North Carolina), Alek Askeroglu (Duke), and Josh Logan (Virginia) are continuing the program's reputation for developing college-ready talent.

The 2027 class has established itself as one of the premier groups in the nation. Ending their 2024-2025 season ranked number four in North America, with a record of 21-5-1. With standouts such as JT Cross (Notre Dame), George Caldroney (Princeton), Riley Woods (Princeton), and Bodhi Harmon (Duke), this team combines elite skill with a competitive edge that mirrors the culture Mad Dog has built across all levels. Their success has solidified Mad Dog's place among the country's top club programs, proving that the pipeline of talent continues to thrive from coast to coast.

Many alumni now return to coach within the system, including Brett Koopman, who worked with the San Diego regional team and assisted with the 2028 National Black squad this summer. That cycle of mentorship, players becoming coaches, underscores the sense of community that has defined Mad Dog from day one.

The Mad Dog 2028 National Black team is led by Mike Hungerford, an Ithaca College graduate and one of the most respected coaches in the region. Hungerford brings over 32 years of coaching experience, including time at both Farmingdale and Cold Spring Harbor, and his influence is felt throughout the program. Player development has always been his priority, a principle that aligns perfectly with Mad Dog's broader philosophy.

Hungerford took the helm of the 2028 National Black team in February 2024, guiding a roster composed of players from at least six different states. His staff has included seasoned assistants such as Lou Aboyoun (East Elite and National Director) and Brett Koopman, providing the group with a wealth of coaching experience and diverse perspectives.

In just its first year under Hungerford's leadership, Mad Dog 2028 National Black has already made a statement. Ending the 2024-2025 season ranked third in North America, with a record of 18-5. The team captured the Naptown National Challenge championship this past summer and reached the semifinals of the NAL, competing against some of the top club programs in the country.

Having a roster that consists of players who all compete for clubs operating under the Mad Dog umbrella, the players have forged an exceptional chemistry. Players from across the country quickly bonded, showing pride in representing the Mad Dog name while embracing the team-first mentality that defines the brand.

“We play as a team,” Hungerford said. “The players are from all over, but they love being together. They're proud to wear Mad Dog National on their chest.”

That unity translates directly to on-field performance. The team features elite goaltending, a dominant faceoff unit, and depth across every position group. The attack operates with precision and creativity, the midfield corps can both score and defend, and the defensive unit has proven capable of holding elite opponents in check.

What truly separates Mad Dog 2028 National Black from other national teams is its structure. Hungerford runs the group like a varsity high-school program, complete with set offensive systems, organized riding and clearing packages, and a cohesive defensive philosophy. The players take ownership of that accountability, and the leadership within the roster drives it forward.

“This team has real leadership,” Hungerford noted. “We have a few individuals who run the ship, and that's rare for a club team. They lead by example, play hard, and demand the same from their teammates. It's refreshing to see a group at this level play with that kind of discipline and buy-in.”

The result is a team that doesn't just showcase talent, it plays connected, system lacrosse. That blend of national-level skill and program-level chemistry has become the hallmark of Mad Dog 2028 National Black, mirroring the very principles the Duerr brothers built the organization on nearly two decades ago.

From its beginnings as a local New Jersey camp to its evolution into a nationwide powerhouse, Mad Dog Lacrosse has never lost sight of its mission: developing players who love the game, play it the right way, and represent something larger than themselves. The 2028 National Black team embodies that vision, skilled, selfless, and built on culture. With a championship already under its belt and more on the horizon, the group stands as a fitting reflection of what Mad Dog Lacrosse has become: a program driven by passion, built on relationships, and proven by results.

One of the premier players in the 2028 class, PJ possesses the size, strength, and skill set to contend for the top overall spot in the class. A complete attackman, he can score from multiple levels, feed effectively, and move off-ball with precision. His competitiveness sets him apart; he plays with energy and focus, doing all the little things that contribute to his team's success. PJ is also a strong rider who embraces every aspect of the game, showing a high lacrosse IQ and unselfish play within the system. Transferring to Culver Academy this year and also competing with the Texas Nationals, he continues to prove himself as one of the most productive and well-rounded offensive talents in the country.

One of the most skilled and intelligent attackmen in the 2028 class, Wayte plays the game with a poise and understanding well beyond his years. He competes fearlessly, embracing contact and consistently finding ways to reach the cage. A versatile offensive threat, he can produce with or without the ball and thrives in the pick-and-roll game, where his timing and vision shine. Wayte's riding ability is deceptively strong, and his gritty, high-motor play gives him the edge in tight matchups. Reminiscent of former Virginia star Ian Laviano, he brings that same blend of toughness, precision, and creativity, and continues to stand out as a leader for Texas Nationals.

A high-level offensive talent, Will is as crafty as he is dangerous, utilizing deceptive footwork and a diverse arsenal of moves to find his way to the cage consistently. The Naptown Championship Offensive MVP brings experience as both an attackman and midfielder, giving him the versatility to create from multiple spots on the field. Will's feel for the game is outstanding; he knows when to initiate, when to move off the ball, and how to exploit defensive gaps from behind the cage or the wings. Alongside PJ Kennedy and Wayte McKnight, he forms a trio of dynamic right-handed dodging threats that drive Mad Dog National Black's offensive firepower. After moving from the Colorado Kings to Mad Dog West Elite this offseason, he's continued to elevate his game and assert himself as one of the most polished scorers in the 2028 class.

A crafty left-handed finisher, Hero has developed into a complete offensive threat, with the ability to both create and capitalize on opportunities within the flow of an offense. Over the past year at IMG Academy, he's made tremendous strides, sharpening his dodging, improving his decision-making, and learning how to make severe damage without the ball. His off-ball timing and finishing instincts make him a constant scoring threat, especially when paired with strong right-handed playmakers. Also a member of Mad Dog West Elite, Hero brings a balanced, opportunistic style that translates well to higher levels of play. With his progression and feel for the game, he could end up being a steal for the right college program.

A smooth left-handed finisher with excellent hands, Case is the type of player who quietly makes every possession better. His lacrosse IQ stands out; he reads defenses well, makes smart off-ball movements, and does all the little things that keep an offense flowing. A proven winner, he was one of the only freshmen on Cherry Creek's 2025 Colorado state championship team, gaining valuable experience on one of the region's premier high school programs. Since moving from the Colorado Kings to Mad Dog West Elite this offseason, Case has continued to elevate his game and show why his upside is so high. With his skill, intelligence, and team-first mentality, he could be a major steal for the right college program.

A smart, well-rounded attackman, Wyatt has built a reputation as one of the most dependable off-ball players in his class. He times his cuts perfectly and finishes with confidence using either hand, making him a consistent scoring option around the crease. Beyond his offensive instincts, Wyatt is an excellent rider and a strong ground-ball presence, often creating extra possessions through hustle and anticipation. A longtime standout on the club circuit, he brings experience and composure to every game. He played at the U-20s this summer alongside his twin brother Weston as two of the youngest players at the event, and he is a steady member of the Mad Dog West Elite squad as well.

One of the top two-way midfielders in the 2028 class, Cam is a dynamic athlete who impacts every facet of the game. He's a proven all-star performer, earning recognition at multiple events last summer for his ability to dominate between the lines. Cam checks every box, he defends with discipline, clears with confidence, and can create or finish in transition with ease. What makes him special is his growth; as his lacrosse IQ and maturity have developed, his game has become both more complete and more commanding. A true leader and competitor, Cam sets the tone for Mad Dog West Elite with his energy, versatility, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

A big, strong left-handed midfielder from Canada, Trent plays with the kind of physical edge that energizes his team. He can both absorb and initiate contact, using his frame and power to create separation and finish through pressure. Offensively, he brings a heavy shot with time and room and has shown the versatility to play both midfield and attack roles effectively. Beyond his scoring ability, Trent contributes in every area. He's excellent off the ground and steady on the defensive end when matched up. A hardworking and passionate player who's always looking to improve, Trent's energy and competitiveness make him a genuine “juice” guy for Mad Dog West Elite, with a ceiling as high as any in his class.

At 6'3”, Dante brings ideal size and presence to the midfield, pairing his frame with a competitive edge and strong two-way play. He's dependable on the faceoff wings, excellent off the ground, and plays with a motor that never stops. What makes Dante stand out is his versatility; he can adapt to multiple roles and contribute in all phases of the game, from defense to transition to half-field offense. His commitment to improving and his willingness to do the dirty work make him invaluable to any roster. A driven, team-first competitor, Dante continues to develop into one of the most intriguing midfield prospects in the Mad Dog West Elite pipeline.

A powerful and athletic midfielder, Asher has followed a similar path to his older brother Brock Getson, a top 2025 defender now at Harvard, by moving from Harvard-Westlake (CA) to Lawrenceville (NJ) for his sophomore year. With excellent size and deceptive speed, Asher has a natural ability to get to the goal and finish in traffic. He's just beginning to tap into his full potential, showing flashes of dominance on both ends of the field. His combination of athleticism and versatility gives him the tools to contribute as an offensive initiator or a defensive midfielder, depending on how he's deployed at Lawrenceville. Competing with Mad Dog West Elite, Asher continues to evolve into a complete, college-caliber two-way threat with an exciting ceiling.

A tough, hard-nosed midfielder from one of Texas' premier programs, Jake plays with intensity and confidence every time he steps on the field. He's a strong dodger who attacks the middle with purpose, using his physicality to create opportunities for himself and his teammates.
