Expert Analysis

Matt Colella is a sky-scraping, two-handed middie with the frame, athleticism, & lacrosse IQ to impact every area of the field. Matt can initiate from both alleys up top, the wings, & behind the cage, showing comfort attacking defenders from multiple launch points. Early in his varsity career, he flashed his scoring ability as a downhill dodger, sweeping & stepping down with confidence against top competition. Colella announced himself during the National Prep semifinals vs Salisbury, scoring on the run from range with his left before burying a right-handed step-down from deep on a give-&-go. As his game matured into his junior season, Matt expanded his impact beyond initiation. He became more effective inside, moving with patience as a big target, finishing in tight, including a left-handed goal against Darien. Colella keeps his head up while dodging or operating on the perimeter, allowing him to create clean opportunities when defenses slide early or lose structure. A true two-way presence, he runs the field in transition, protects his stick, corrals rebounds in traffic, & competes defensively with size, effort, & awareness. Matt’s visible enthusiasm shows up during momentum-shifting stretches, often celebrating with teammates as plays break his team’s way. Whether driving inside, running the wings, contributing in transition, or finishing on the crease, Colella profiles as an all-purpose, high-upside middie whose growth curve & two-way impact separate him from many in his class. Verbally committed to the admissions process at Penn.

There’s always been a lot to like about Colella’s game, which spoke loudly during his sophomore year with the Bruins. This summer, he’s continued to show off how much he can do at a high level and the effort he puts into all facets of the game. Colella came out hot with his best showing, a two-goal effort on Monday night. He tends to score the bulk of his goals in transition, however, he also looked comfortable when inverting, getting up the hash early on in the event. Put him on either end of the field or the wings of face-offs and feel good about what you’re getting.

Colella was all over the field. Typically, when a player is described as being good in transition, our mind immediately understands that to mean he is good going from defense to offense. And rest assured, Colella is plenty good in those moments. But he also had an impact going in the other direction. As Salisbury would try to start transition off saves or ground balls, Colella ran the play down multiple times. Also a wide receiver, his speed was on full display. Even with a 5-10 yard head start, Colella ran down clearing players who looked to be on their way to a fast break situation, killing the break opportunity himself by beating the Salisbury player to the spot. He also had two goals on the night off the dodge, using that same speed to run by his man and score on sweeps from the midfield.
