At the Committed Combine, McCottry proved to be an athletic pole who owns imposing size, textbook technique, and an extremely active stick. This Ohio State commit repeatedly got into ball carriers early in their dodges and used his size advantage to move his opponents off their intended path. McCottry’s ability to keep a ball carrier in front of him and turn that offensive player multiple times was impressive too. His polished footwork and fundamentally sound techniques were major factors in that area. With his long wingspan and lively stick, McCottry was able to deflect or intercept a number of passes, too. As a team defender, McCottry demonstrated a high IQ and excellent field awareness.    

This Ohio State commit is the epitome of an elite, two-way defender. In the win over Haverford McCottry displayed incredible speed and athleticism as well as a wicked long-range shot. On two separate occasions in this game, McCottry raced up field to join the fast break, caught a pass on the run, then set his feet and fired a missile into the net. Both of those impressive scoring efforts were unleashed from 15-18 yards out. On defense, this lefty provided tenacious on-ball pressure and frequently secured GBs in traffic. Plus, McCottry executed a handful of effective double teams.  

Buy McCottry’s stock now before it keeps climbing. Prioritized by a handful of Big 10 and ACC programs in early September, McCottry’s best lacrosse is ahead of him after a breakthrough summer. A tough, rangy 6’3 left-hander who makes his presence felt every time he’s out there, McCottry is part of a trio of promising junior defensemen at Loyola, a program known for sending poles to top Division I programs. After showing flashes as a sophomore on varsity, he excelled with FCA this summer and had an impressive showing at NHSLS. He’s a playmaker on the back end who has terrific hands and fundamentally sound approaches, two qualities that allow him to be disruptive.
