Mejia found time in Lawrenceville’s SSDM rotation this spring, but he went back to pole at NHSLS. What stood out this spring was that he not only has the footwork and physicality to hold his own with a shortstick, but he also brings a competitive edge and dawg-like mentality. He goes all out on ground balls and in the clearing game, and he embraces isolation dodges. Once he returned to his natural spot as an LSM this summer, the move was seamless. He gets his stick into lanes, has some takeaway checks in his arsenal, and is reliable with the ball.

A converted longstick who came to Lawrenceville after spending two years at Bothell (Wash.), Mejia’s shortstick play has been something of a revelation. An excellent athlete, he plays at full speed at all times and relies on high-level footwork, backpedaling and moving laterally at an exceptional level. Meijia was sticky on-ball, winning all his reps in coverage, forcing three turnovers, cleanly scooping the groundball, and then darting upfield in transition. While serving as the trailer on a fast break in the fourth quarter, he even stepped in and scored from 15 yards before the goal was mysteriously waved off. Part of a highly impressive SSDM unit for the Big Red, Meijia has the makeup of a prospect who could become one of the more coveted ’28s at the position come September.
