live plenty of times since last summer, and he continues to live up to his reputation as the best goalie in the 2027 class. The Syracuse commit has everything you look for in a high-impact netminder: size, anticipation, and consistency under pressure. To be considered an elite goalie, you have to bring more than just shot-stopping ability, and Sobel absolutely does. Despite allowing 10 goals against a relentless St. John’s offense, I had him credited with 13 saves, many of them high-difficulty stops. The goals that did get by him came off quality chances — free step-downs, screens, pipe-to-pipe movement, or deceptive finishes. Against goalies like Sobel, those are the only types of shots that go in; everything else he swallows up cleanly.
What separates Sobel from most goalies his age is his complete command of the position. He anticipates feeds before they happen, routinely picking off passes near the crease, and he plays an assertive, high arc that maximizes his frame. Some might label him a “flopper” at first glance, but that doesn’t fit — even when he drops to his knees, his length allows him to stay tall, shoot his hands high, and take away the upper corners. Sobel is a must-see prospect. Regardless of how well his defense plays in front of him, he finds ways to impress. His intangible qualities that you can’t teach make him a cornerstone of Syracuse’s future and the premier goalie in the 2027 class.

The No. 1 ranked played in the Class of 2027 has been making frequent headlines of late. At the end of August, Sobel announced he had departed Springside Chestnut Hill Academy and enrolled at IMG Academy in Florida. Now comes the news that Sobel has given his verbal commitment to Syracuse. The Orange coaching staff must be thrilled with the addition of this 5-star goalie to their 2027 recruiting class. Sobel possesses imposing size, fast hands, and incredible agility. His ability to track shooters combined with his elite stick skills produce a high percentage of clean saves. After his fantastic sophomore campaign Sobel was named as an All-American as well as a 1st Team All-Inter-Ac selection.

The No. 5 ranked played in the Class of 2027 announced earlier this week that he has departed Springside Chestnut Hill Academy and enrolled at IMG Academy in Florida. IMG is adding a 5-star goalie with all the tools to play at an elite DI school. Sobel owns fantastic size and quick hands. That combination allows Sobel to cover every inch of the cage above his hips. Sobel also possesses unbelievable agility and anticipation skills. So, he has no issues dropping down to stop low shots either. Sobel delivers incredible outlet passes too. His elite stick skills and quick release enable Sobel to deliver long bombs into the offensive end. After the 2025 season Sobel was named as an All-American and a 1st Team All-Inter-Ac selection.

Quite frankly, any of the four goalies could have been given the Defensive MVP nod on Wednesday, and I wouldn’t have batted an eye — that’s just how good they were on the big stage, not to mention all week. Sobel, a habitual goal-stealer who is firmly in the mix for the No. 1 overall spot, corralled an unofficial tally of six saves with five goals allowed. Overall, I was just impressed with his ability out of the cage as I was with his prowess inside the crease, and we’re talking about a kid who posted 10 saves with six allowed right off the bat in Monday’s opening session. He has a towering frame, and though he flops to his knees a considerable amount, he’s excellent at catching shots cleanly and is quick to get an outlet pass up and out. Exuding confidence and poise in and out of the net, Sobel plays angles impeccably well and makes stellar saves look nonchalant. He’s a joy to watch and was phenomenal all week for Team 1 alongside fellow All-Star netminder Teddy Oh, who was just as good at Showtime.

Sobel is as good as advertised, and that’s probably putting it lightly. A tremendous ball-stopper who stands 6’4 and nearly 200 pounds, he moves around like he’s significantly smaller and is far more than just an hulking target for shooters. The South Jersey native does an awesome job of getting down to low shots, and when he’s not able to make the save with his stick, he soaks shots with his upper body or makes a kick save, something he did against Mad Dog while making five saves and allowing two goals in his half. On the clear, he’s super decisive and composed with his outlets. In between the pipes, Sobel shows no wasted movements and allows his defense to play with the utmost confidence. On pace to start for the next three years, it’s scary to consider how much better he’ll get given that Hall of Famer Brian Dougherty is his head coach at SCH, which also has some guy named Blaze Riorden on staff.
