Expert Analysis
Carey Smith | Prep Lacrosse Scout
Devir (1 goal & 1 assist unofficially) impressed with his ability to initiate in settled action. He got downhill in a flash, eluded sliding defenders and then scored or distributed while on the move. He flashed extremely polished stick skills on a left-handed finish in close while running full speed. Devir proved to be a patient ball carrier who did not settle for low percentage opportunities. His high IQ was evident when he worked in two man-man action. Devir’s speed out of the box applied constant pressure on Hill’s defense.

Devir resumed his role on this team as a workhorse to start the year. On almost every offensive possession, it seemed like Devir was out on the field and dodging his tail off, drawing a slide and moving the ball with efficiency. He’s a tough and gritty player who plays hard with quick feet and a smooth dodging technique and that’s exactly how he scored his goal. He muscled his way into the middle of the field and used his strength to absorb contact and finish past the goaltender. He has a good burst of speed out of his dodge and does a good job of creating space from his defender to take a shot or move it. Along with Scioletti, the Yale commit will be a focal point of the Ironmen offense this season.

John Devis is a consensus top-100 player in his class. Devir scored 35 goals & 19 assists in 2024. This includes a clutch 4-goal performance in helping Don Bosco capture the (Non-Public A) State Championship. His leadership is displayed through his passionate play & is preselected as a captain in 2025. Look for this competitor to continue finishing through contact & fighting his way to the goal with either hand. Devir shows the ability to mix up his shot locations on the run & be a consistent threat with his strength. He will use quick splits & fundamental rolls to get to a dangerous position on the field. Devir has a good hold on the ball as even when you slide to him he is physical enough & skilled enough to make you pay. Verbally committed to Yale.

always has, its energy. It’s infectious and it can lift up a team in a split second. As the 65th-ranked player in his class, Devir played an integral part in Don Bosco Prep’s state title victory last spring with 4 goals, posting 35 goals and 19 assists for the season. The Yale commit is explosive with great footwork and when dodging he keeps his head up for teammates cutting or setting up a shot on the backside. He is a tough player and has shown the ability to fight through contact and stick checks on his way to the net. He has a smooth shot on the run and places the ball in good spots, but when taking a step down, he has a rocket shot and picks corners with ease. He will certainly play another big part offensively for the Ironmen as they look to go back-to-back as state champs.

Devir finished with four goals on the night. As a sophomore, Devir has shown that he is going to be a problem for opposing defenses to gameplan for. He isn’t the biggest player but possesses the skill, strength, and toughness you want from a midfielder at the next level. He has a hard shot from a distance, and while dodging, Devir can use either hand to break free and shoot or find an open guy. He is also a physical player who doesn’t mind getting in a ground ball scrum or doing work defensively. He is second on the team in points with 35 goals and 19 assists, behind only

has racked up 40 points on the season with a decent mix of passing and scoring, and as a sophomore, he’s only getting started. He finished with four goals and one assist while demonstrating some crafty dodging. He is very shifty and uses his speed when dodging, which helps him free up his hands for a shot or pass. He scored inside while working off-ball on a good cut and a nice pass from Matthew Dyszkiewicz (Iona) when New Canaan switched to its zone D.

Remarkably skilled, Devir is far from an unknown commodity, having excelled with Leading Edge’s ‘25s before deciding to reclass heading into the school year. Everything he did popped during Saturday’s drills and skill work, and he carried that over to gameplay, during which he was super productive and steady. Explosive coming out of his dodge and possessing excellent hands, he had a handful of gorgeous feeds and was also impactful when he lined up on attack on the final day. Devir was always getting back to the middle of the field and other high-percentage areas and overall did a terrific job playing within himself and making things happen under pressure or when the first look wasn’t there.
