About Nico
Expert Analysis
Eric Bretz | Prep Lacrosse Scout
Szapka’s aggressive nature is not only seen but felt for the opposition, with hard checks on the hands and a combative approach on loose balls, utilizing his strong lower body and instincts to get the ball to space and push it upfield. The Warwick (N.Y.) native shows his athleticism when getting dodged on; with a wide stance, he uses his stick length to engage matchups early in their dodge and be disruptive. He displays good timing on his checks, either forcing a loose ball or deterring his opponents from re-dodging with good footwork and pressure at the point of attack. Szapka can play both down D and LSM and doesn’t get flustered with the ball when pressure is applied. With Don Bosco Prep reloading the defensive unit after key starters have graduated, Szapka will work to earn a role for the Ironmen.
