Expert Analysis
Carey Smith | Prep Lacrosse Scout
During his fantastic sophomore campaign at Shady Side, the versatile Tierney dominated games from LSM as well as close defense. The first item that popped about Tierney’s skill set was his ability to stay in front of ball carriers. His smooth lateral movements, defensive instincts and agility enabled Tierney to repeatedly beat ball carriers to spots and then turn them. As an on-ball defender, Tierney also displayed extreme patience. He tracked opponents until they made a mistake and then unleashed a powerful stick check or crafty poke that caused a turnover. Tierney’s ability to navigate over or around screens is an underrated skill that helped him to stay glued to ball carriers for long stretches. This 2028 prospect also demonstrated that he owns the speed, cut back moves and stick skills to push the rock in transition.

Landon Tierney is a tall and athletic defender from Shady Side who brings reliability and versatility to the Next Level defense. Standing at 6’3”, Tierney is comfortable playing both up top as a long stick midfielder and down low as a close defender, consistently using strong angles and disciplined footwork to stay in front of his matchup. Simply put, he does not get beaten, demonstrating a rare ability to throw timely and effective checks without sacrificing positioning or balance. Tierney is also confident with the ball in his stick, often stepping up to relieve pressure and carry through traffic when time is limited to clear the midline. In transition, he becomes a legitimate weapon, capable of shooting on the run or delivering accurate passes to initiate offense. His composure, athleticism, and all-around defensive skill set makes him a dependable presence in every situation.
