Expert Analysis
Ty Xanders | Prep Lacrosse Scout
Mayfield has been highlighted by Prep Lacrosse’s top PA scout, Carey Smith, on several occasions, but he deserves his flowers from the national crew as well. A Pittsburgh-based recruit who narrowly missed the Top 100, he checked in at No. 35 in the Mid-Atlantic, where 28 recruits made the national list. A standout for Project Midwest and Resolute, he’s a force from up top, though he plays attack during the high school season, as he should. His release is rather pretty, and he’s exceptionally two-handed and dynamic, too. Mayfield’s hitch is constantly freeing up his hands, plus he’s unselfish and has standout vision to set up his teammates. I love how explosive he is out of his rollbacks, and while he might not be the type to routinely win his matchups with a straight-up speed dodge, he’s always creating offense. I have as much respect for Richmond’s staff as I do any other Division I program in terms of its ability to evaluate and develop talent— an opinion I’m never shy about sharing— and the Spiders got a gem in this stalwart from the Steel City.

On Monday, Mayfield announced that he had committed to Richmond. In my opinion, the Spiders’ coaching staff got an absolute stud in this athletic midfielder with size, speed, and highly polished stick skills. During his extraordinary sophomore season, Mayfield posted 57 goals to go along with 34 assists and was a 1st Team All-WPIAL selection. In transition, Mayfield can blow past, run over, or shake defenders until he gets over the restraining line. Mayfield’s elusive stick maneuvers then allow him to carry the ball to the cage for a scoring chance in close. In settled action, Mayfield excels at dodging down the alley and then using his elite stick skills to crank a shot into the net or distribute to a teammate while on the run. His ability to dodge going to his left or right and then run through contact makes Mayfield impossible to defend 1v1. The Richmond staff will also be impressed with Mayfield’s ability to crank step-downs into the net. Mayfield’s physicality and smooth lateral movements allow him to take shifts as a SSDM, too.

Mayfield is an incredibly talented midfielder with size and speed who poured in 57 goals and dished out 34 assists last season. Those impressive stats earned Mayfield 1st Team All-WPIAL honors. Mayfield excels in transition as well as in settled action. In transition, the trifecta of Mayfield’s speed, shifty moves, and ability to run through contact allow him to go coast to coast for goals and assists. Mayfield can also come out of the box, receive an outlet pass, and then get downhill in a flash to create a scoring chance. In 6v6 action, Mayfield thrives at exploding down the alley and then using his polished stick to score or distribute on the run. His ability to dodge going to his left or right keeps defenders off-balance. College coaches will also love the fact that Mayfield can bury long-range sidearms from anywhere on the field. When he initiates from X, Mayfield can streak around the corner for goals in close or push up the hash and then fire a jump shot into the net.

This athletic midfielder with noteworthy size and filthy stick skills is posting a breakout sophomore campaign. Through five games, Mayfield had posted 17 goals to go along with six dimes. Highlighting Mayfield’s amazing start to the 2026 season is a four-goal, two-assist performance during a win over Cannon McMillan, as well as a five-goal, one-assist effort against North Allegheny. As a midfielder, Mayfield possesses the speed and change-of-direction moves to push the ball for goals and assists in transition or when coming out of the box. When he runs at attack, Mayfield is an elite finisher. He excels at capping off a fast break with a crease dunk. In 6v6 action, Mayfield thrives playing off-ball where he can find open space, then receive a pass and swiftly rip a shot into the net. Once he has established that shooting threat, Mayfield effectively uses fakes and hitch moves to set up his charges to the cage.
