Raio recently broke Suffolk County’s all-time goals record (254), which is flat-out ridiculous considering he’s been a midfielder for the bulk of his five-year career. He’s up to 65 goals and 55 assists for the year, having led Long Island with 75 goals and 119 points a year ago. An outstanding athlete with elite hands, Raio has tremendous range and possesses an array of moves to get his hands free. A smooth operator with the ball in his stick, Raio essentially uncoverable during the spring, as he was in the fall, during which he broke records as a wide receiver. He’s also in contention for a spot on the U.S. U-20 team that will head to South Korea in August, along with three other Tar Heels.

Raio, a UNC commit, is one of the best players on Long Island. As a junior, he was named Suffolk County Player of the Year, recording 75 goals and 119 points while breaking Hills’ records. Expectations are sky-high for him heading into his senior season. He demands the full attention of opposing defenses and can score effectively with both hands.

No midfielder in the Class of 2025 had as strong of a junior season as Raio. The two-sport standout was named the Suffolk County Player of the Year after posting a 75-goal, 44-assist stat line for a team that didn’t lose a game until May and will return the lion’s share of its starting lineup heading into next year. For Team 91 Long Island, Raio and Merrill make up one of the better midfield tandems in recent memory and each showed their ability to score in a variety of ways. Raio posted two goals in a Wednesday morning game, including a goal off of Team 91’s Nations look. He’s clearly taken his game to another level as of late, and he looks every bit of a player who could wind up as the No. 1 midfielder in the class when it’s all said and done.

The No. 10 recruit in the junior class had another big day, finishing with four goals and two assists in the win. Hills was ready for the zone defense and was able to get Raio in spots to succeed. In the opening quarter, the UNC commit stung the top left corner on a cannon of a shot. Raio also displayed great vision constantly finding James Bruno in the first half. He does an excellent job dissecting the defense while dodging to find his open teammates. In the third quarter, Raio swept his defender and found a cutting Bruno for a goal. Arguably the most impressive sequence of the game for Raio started on defense. Hills sprinkled in a zone defense with Raio and another short stick playing the low pipes. Raio delivered lockdown defense during this stretch. Hills eventually got the ball back and it was Raio sprinting downfield and firing a righty laser down the alley for another goal.

Raio made a loud statement on Long Island in the form of a 90-point season on 60 goals and 30 assists, impressive totals for a college-bound senior in Suffolk County, let alone a sophomore middie. On the summer circuit, his innate feel for the game was quickly apparent — if lacrosse used the plus-minus statistic, Raio’s would likely be higher than any ’25 at his position due to his ability to consistently make the right play with poise. He has elite hands, setting LI single-season records this fall with 84 receptions and 1,381 receiving yards along with 16 receiving touchdowns while catching passes from another record-breaker in No. 28 junior Joseph Filardi Joseph Filardi Joseph Filardi 6'0" | 170 lbs | D | Left Hand Half Hollow Hills West | 2025 #28 Nation NY (Syracuse), his 91 Shock teammate. In club ball, he works in tandem with Merrill and often gets matched up with shortsticks, using his foot speed to get by them. There are times when he could stand to be more aggressive and less passive, although that isn’t the case in the spring or a long-term concern. Even though he’s the type of matchup that opponents would want to cover with a longstick, Raio is headed to a place where he’ll be surrounded by a wealth of dynamic 5-star middies in the ’24 and ’25 recruiting classes, which should open things up for him to do even more damage.
