St. Anne’s-Belfield Lacrosse: 50 Years of Excellence

Few high school lacrosse programs in Virginia can match the blend of longevity, stability, and modern national relevance that defines St. Anne's-Belfield School. Located in Charlottesville, Virginia, right next to the campus of the University of Virginia, “STAB” has spent more than five decades establishing itself as one of the Commonwealth's most respected high school programs, guided by rare continuity of leadership, an uncompromising commitment to daily excellence, and a culture built on brotherhood, accountability, respect, and competitive relentlessness.   Lacrosse first arrived on campus in 1972, introduced by Ham Bishop, who was serving as headmaster at the time. A graduate of the Gilman School in Baltimore, Bishop believed lacrosse could become something special for the new institution following the 1971 merger of the Saint Anne's School (all-girls) and the Belfield School (all-boys). The program's earliest varsity seasons followed shortly thereafter, with Tom Duquette serving as head coach from 1973 to 1978 and helping establish the foundation of STAB lacrosse. In 1979, Doug Tarring took over, ushering in a transformational era that lasted until 2010. Widely regarded as one of the most successful high school lacrosse coaches in Virginia history, Tarring helped shape STAB into a perennial power and destination program. After Tarring retired, Bo Perriello, a STAB alumnus who went on to play at Notre Dame, became head coach and led the program from 2010 through 2023, arriving from the Delbarton School in New Jersey. The current head coach, Nic Bell, was the head coach at Taft for six seasons, during which he won the Founders League Championships in 2018, 2022, and 2023, the New England West I Championship in 2023, the NHSLS Championship in 2020, and the Geico High School Lacrosse National Championship in 2021. Prior to that, he was the head coach at the Trinity-Pawling School for six years and the Blue Ridge School for two years. Nic Bell is only the third long-standing head coach in the program's history, reflecting the stability and trust that have defined STAB lacrosse for more than half a century.   Rather than relying on a formal list of core values, STAB emphasizes brotherhood, togetherness, toughness, resilience, servanthood, and competitive excellence through daily habits, high-level competition, and expectations that extend beyond the lacrosse field into all areas of school life. The history of STAB lacrosse is defined by generations of elite players who have paved the way. Early trailblazers Billy and Kenny Wyler went on to play at Virginia and North Carolina, respectively, while Johnny Riesky became an All-American goalie at UVA. Perhaps the program's first true superstar was David “Doc” Brown, a four-time All-State and three-time All-American who became the first player in school history to play varsity as an eighth grader before continuing at Virginia. Other notable alumni include Michael Woodfolk (Washington College), Graven Craig (Maryland), Ben O'Neil, a two-time All-American, U-19 Team USA goalie, and national champion at Virginia, and Stedman Oakey, a starter at Notre Dame. In more recent years, STAB has produced elite Division I talent, including Emmett Barger '19 (Notre Dame), Pierre Reeves '21 (Georgetown), Ian Hurley '22 (Navy), Peyton Booth '24 (Cornell), Colin Maher '25 (Brown), and Connor Shellenberger '19 (Virginia), a Four-Time First-Team All-American who went on to compete in the PLL with the New York Atlas, and was 2025 PLL MVP.   STAB wrapped up last season with an 18–3 record, capturing both the Virginia Prep League Championship and the VISAA Division I State Championship. Two of the three losses came in the opening week against national powers Bullis (MD) and Calvert Hall (MD), serving as early measuring sticks. Colin Maher '25 led the way, earning Virginia Prep League, Central Virginia, and Virginia State Player of the Year honors after leading the team and the state in scoring. At the end of the season, Coach Bell was recognized as Central Virginia Coach of the Year, Virginia State Coach of the Year, and US Lacrosse Coach of the Year, awards reflecting competitive success, the sportsmanship that has been modeled throughout the season, and the winning system Coach Bell has put in place.   Development at STAB extends beyond the spring. The program also values multi-sport athletes, believing that competing across seasons builds toughness, athletic intelligence, and long-term durability. Rather than pushing early specialization, STAB embraces players who contribute in other varsity sports, viewing those experiences as an asset to the lacrosse field. The fall includes an eight-week fall-ball period blending individual skill development, an annual team read, and full-team practices. During the winter, the team completes three days of organized lifting, two full-team practice days, and a focused skill-development day with Kip Turner, who works with the program both in-season and out. Players also run youth clinics for lower- and middle school students, emphasizing mentorship, service, and giving back to the game. Entering the upcoming season, expectations remain clear: feel entitled to nothing and earn everything. The focus is not on results, but on maintaining an exceptionally high standard of intensity in daily practice and off-field habits. STAB returns a significant amount of varsity experience across all position groups, highlighted by fourteen seniors committed to play college lacrosse. The team plays fast, thrives in transition, and utilizes a ten-man ride that converted at nearly 40 percent last season, prioritizing possession dominance and constant pressure.   The coaching staff is deep, experienced, and tightly connected to the program's history. Defensive coordinator Jeremy Hart, the dean of students at STAB, works alongside Myron Ripley, one of the most tenured coaches in Virginia, a STAB alumnus, and a former member of the school's board of trustees. Patrick Orr manages the middle of the field, substitutions, and transitions. Reeves Dunn and Matt Yancey assist with the offense, Craig Koester oversees faceoffs, and Kip Turner supports goalie development, skill work, and scheme implementation. Emmett Barger also assisted last season following his two national championships at Notre Dame.   The schedule reflects the program's ambitions. STAB opens with scrimmages against St. John's (DC), Loyola Blakefield (MD), and Episcopal Academy (PA), followed by a spring trip to Charleston. Home matchups against Archbishop Spalding (MD), St. Mary's (MD), Gonzaga (DC), The Hill School (PA), Cardinal Gibbons (NC), and IMG National (FL) are designed to provide elite competition, national exposure, and preparation for in-state domination and another postseason run. His consistency, composure under pressure, and ability to make timely stops have made him a reliable backbone of the defensive end. He tracks the ball well out of sticks, stays balanced through fakes, and shows quick hands on shots inside. His rebound control is a strength, limiting second-chance opportunities and allowing his defense to reset. Norment communicates effectively from the crease, directing slides and organizing matchups to keep the unit connected. Over the past three seasons, his consistency, shot-stopping ability, and command of the defensive end have made him a reliable backbone for the program. Since earning a starting role as a sophomore, he has been a steady anchor and reliable presence on the backline. With his blend of strength, leadership, and defensive edge, Woodfolk has established himself as a cornerstone of the defense. He has contributed across the lineup, making an impact at LSM, close defense, faceoff, MDD, and even serving as the point on the EMO as a sophomore. Farnsworth brings an incredible offensive skill set for a long-stick, excelling between the lines and consistently creating advantages in transition. His lacrosse IQ and adaptability allow him to thrive in a variety of roles without sacrificing effectiveness. A true lead-by-example player, Farnsworth sets the standard with his work ethic, competitiveness, and team-first approach.     [player_tooltip player_id='174887' first='Julian' last='Fisher'] is a 6'3 long-stick midfielder and a Tufts University commit who brings intelligence, instinct, and fluidity to the middle of the field. An incredibly bright player, Fisher shows excellent hands and a smooth handle off the ground, allowing him to secure possessions and push transition confidently. He runs the field extremely well, covering ground with ease and staying effective between the lines. Fisher is a composed and reliable cover man, using his length and awareness to disrupt plays in space. His skill set and versatility make him a strong complement in the midfield, adding balance and consistency to the unit.     Brody Weber is a 6'4 LSM/defenseman and Middlebury College commit who brings rare athleticism, effort, and upside to the defensive end. A raw but highly athletic player with an incredible motor, Weber consistently plays with energy and intensity. After missing much of last season due to an ACL injury, he is now nearing full strength and trending back to form. His return adds another layer of athleticism, physicality, and intelligence to the back end. Capable of contributing at both LSM and close defense, Weber also stands out as a high-character young man who elevates the group with his mindset and work ethic.     [player_tooltip player_id='174890' first='Brendan' last='Keogh'] is a converted attackman who has developed into an excellent short-stick defensive midfielder and one of the most dependable players in the middle of the field. He brings toughness, consistency, and a high motor to every shift, excelling in on-ball defense and between-the-lines play. Keogh's offensive background shows in his comfort with the ball, allowing him to contribute confidently in transition and maintain possession under pressure. A returning All–Virginia Prep League honoree at the SSDM position, he has proven his impact at a high level. Truly selfless and egoless, Keogh leads through effort and reliability, making him a trusted presence and tone-setter in the midfield.     Courtlandt Reidneouer is a 6'0 faceoff specialist and Colgate commit who has been a four-year starter and a consistent difference-maker at the position. A returning First Team All–Virginia Prep League and All-State selection, he has proven himself against top competition year after year. Reidneouer is an outstanding competitor and athlete, particularly after the whistle, where he excels at creating second-chance opportunities. He is very effective at generating offense out in front, turning wins into immediate pressure. A reliable gameday contributor and an even better teammate, Reidneouer brings competitiveness, consistency, and leadership to the faceoff unit.     [player_tooltip player_id='45437' first='Harrison' last='Morris'] is one of the most athletic and explosive midfielders in the state, capable of creating offense out of nothing. A truly dynamic weapon, he brings speed, power, and creativity that consistently stress defenses. Morris was named the program's MVP (“Tarring Award”) as a sophomore, underscoring his impact at a young age. After missing a significant portion of last season due to a hand injury, he has returned healthy and is ready to GO!  Few players are as committed to their personal growth and development, making Morris a high-upside difference-maker in the midfield. A left-handed threat, he has a quarterback-type presence behind the net, showing the vision and composure to both initiate offense and control tempo. His athletic ability allows him to create separation, while his feel for the game helps him capitalize on defensive mistakes. After committing significant time in the weight room, Gould has taken a noticeable step forward this year and continues to trend toward becoming one of the top offensive players in the state and region. Tasked with competing against stronger, faster competition, Breslin rose to the challenge and emerged as one of the top offensive midfielders in the state. His impact was recognized when he was named the team's Offensive MVP (Robertson Award) last season. An excellent athlete, Breslin brings pace, confidence, and scoring punch to the midfield. His ability to stretch defenses and finish opportunities adds a consistent threat level that changes how opponents game-plan. His size and feel allows him to be effective as both a finisher and a facilitator, especially in settled situations. Reliable and dependable, Baron is positioned to expand his role even further this season as a key piece of the offense. One of the best teammates in the program, de Vink is deeply committed to helping those around him be their best, setting the tone with his leadership and work ethic. He is effective on both sides of the ball, using his athleticism and his understanding of the game to impact play across multiple phases. De Vink plays with maturity and confidence, showing the ability to handle responsibility in competitive environments. With Division I offers already in hand and strong high-academic Division III interest, he enters this season poised for a breakout year with significant upside. Welsh has some of the best eyes on the roster, consistently seeing through defenses and anticipating slides before they arrive. He is a strong distributor and is especially effective operating from behind the net, where he controls tempo and creates for others. With Division I interest already building, Welsh is positioned to make a recruiting decision this summer as his role continues to expand. His feel for the game and ability to play through traffic have stood out throughout winter practices. Based on his play thus far, Babony is projected to run on one of the team's top two midfield lines this spring. With both Division I and Division III offers already in hand, he is expected to play through the spring before making a recruiting decision. He can contribute effectively at either midfield or attack, giving the staff flexibility in how he is deployed. Starling shows very solid technical skill at the stripe, with hand speed and quickness that continue to improve. His instincts and effort level make him effective in both settled defense and transition.
