CJ Mezzatesta | Prep Lacrosse Scout
Gavin Duran is a 6’1, 185-pound standout who earned a varsity role as a sophomore at Chaminade, proving his physical presence and advanced defensive skillset early in his high school career. Duran brings a solid combination of size, speed, and physicality to both the close defense and LSM positions. A hard-hitting defenseman with excellent stick skills and athleticism, Duran thrives in high-pressure matchups and succeeds in the challenge of taking on the opposing team’s top offensive weapon. His footwork and speed allow him to match up with quick attackmen around the crease or athletic midfielders dodging from up top. Tough, aggressive, and relentless in his approach, Duran is the kind of defender who can take over a matchup and change the game’s overall outcome.

More often than not, Duran took on the opponents’ biggest attackman and made his presence felt on-ball to make life difficult for his assignment. That says a lot, of course, considering the caliber of the team his loaded LI Express squad went up against. I’d like to see him become a bit more consistent with his off-ball defense, but I love how well he plays angles, how hard he slides, and the level at which he communicates. Duran’s ability to play with physicality and get out on attackmen’s hands stands out, and he’s great at making the right decision in the clearing game. He’s another guy who I’m very intrigued to see where he chooses to play.

Duran was one of the first defensemen that stood out during Saturday’s programming. Well-rounded and well-coached, he’s great at initiating contact and playing angles, showing strong fundamentals and awareness at all times. Listed at 6’0 and 185 pounds, Duran was consistently disruptive, tipping shots and passes to interrupt possessions, but he’s equally effective as a position defender and vocal off-ball presence. Time after time, he made plays that often translated to goals on the other end.
