About Liam

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

My game is built on making everyone around me better. I play attack, but I think of myself as a quarterback. I’m always reading the defense, finding the open man, and making the pass before the window even opens. My vision and IQ are what set me apart. I’m known for my feeding, including the no-look pass that tends to catch defenses off guard. When I have a crease, I finish high to low.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I’m competitive but balanced. I hate losing and use it as fuel, but I know how to process it and move on. I study the competition ahead of time and walk in confident but grounded, because arrogance gets you beat. I earn my spot every day in practice and don’t fold when games get hard. Off the field I bring energy and I’m vocal. My game shows my teammates’ success matters to me as much as my own.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I’m a member of One Love, a club dedicated to raising awareness about healthy relationships, started in memory of UVA lacrosse player Yeardley Love. I’m also a member of Yellow Door. Outside of school I’ve volunteered at the annual Rivanna River cleanup and coached youth lacrosse in the Charlottesville area.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

Leadership for me is about reading the room. I know when to be vocal and when to listen, and my teammates respond to that. I lead through my game first, making everyone around me better, but I’m not quiet when something needs to be said.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

Last year our attack line had three committed seniors, including a state player of the year. I almost asked to move back to midfield just to get more reps. Instead I put my head down and kept working. By the end of the season I was splitting time with them, and by playoffs I was starting. That stretch taught me more about competing for a role than anything else in my career.

What type of college are you looking for?

I’m looking for a school with a strong culture and a real sense of community. I want to be somewhere that feels like it stands for something, where the people are invested in each other on and off the field. Academics matter to me and I want an environment that pushes me in the classroom as much as on the lacrosse field.

Liam Welsh Liam Welsh Liam Welsh 6'2" | 170 lbs | A/M | Right Hand St. Anne's-Belfield School | 2027 VA is a 6’1 attackman from St. Anne’s-Belfield School who brings vision, patience, and playmaking ability to the offensive end. As a sophomore, he finished as the team’s fourth-leading scorer while playing reserve attack minutes off the bench, maximizing his opportunities with efficiency. Welsh has some of the best eyes on the roster, consistently seeing through defenses and anticipating slides before they arrive. He is a strong distributor and is especially effective operating from behind the net, where he controls tempo and creates for others. With Division I interest already building, Welsh is positioned to make a recruiting decision this summer as his role continues to expand.

Liam Welsh stood out at both the NAL Summer Invitational and the National All-Star Games. He continued a strong run that began this spring with a 67-point season (27 goals, 40 assists) at St. Anne’s-Belfield. As a versatile offensive player, he can play at either attack or midfield. Welsh has a smart, well-rounded game. He moves well off the ball and has great vision as a passer. He can also finish well in tight situations. When his feet are set, he becomes a dangerous shooter, as he demonstrated against Team Colorado with several underhand goals from the right wing. When he runs out of the box, Welsh is a nimble dodger who can initiate plays and still shoot on the move. Whether he’s playing as a quarterback at X or stretching defenses from the top, Welsh shows smart play making and real scoring ability.
