New England Update: Brunswick Edges Avon, Salisbury Streaking

The New England prep school leagues are entering the stretch run, with playoff positioning beginning to take shape across the region. Before this weekend's slate, we'll break down Brunswick's statement win over Avon Old Farms, along with some quick notes on Salisbury's recent surge, in addition to a look at where things stand in the Founder's League and NE West I.   Brunswick Wins 13-12 Thriller Over Avon Old Farms   A lot of eyes were on Cosby Field on Wednesday afternoon for a showdown between two teams contending for the NE West I championship: the Brunswick School Bruins, ranked No. 1 in several national polls, and the Winged Beavers of Avon Old Farms, who entered the matchup with a 9–1 record after a dramatic turnaround from last season's 5–9 campaign.   The game also featured two programs relying heavily on standout sophomore classes to drive their offenses, pairing elite 2028 talent with established senior leadership.   With the game deadlocked at two goals apiece after the first quarter, Brunswick sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='125307' first='Hunter' last='Hanford'] finished a beautiful tic-tac-toe sequence just 30 seconds into the second, converting a feed from classmate [player_tooltip player_id='124043' first='Austin' last='Tuttle'] after senior [player_tooltip player_id='17481' first='Rick' last='Giordano'] initiated the play. Avon responded with a 4–0 run, only for Brunswick to answer with four straight goals of its own, including a pair in rapid succession, spanning the final two minutes of the first half and opening two minutes of the third quarter.   Later, Brunswick appeared to be pulling away with a three-goal surge that made it 11–8, highlighted by a man-up goal from Tuttle off a wild set play, another finish from the sophomore on a rebound, and a strike from [player_tooltip player_id='125299' first='David' last='Giuriceo'].   Avon answered again, with goals from Army commit [player_tooltip player_id='142261' first='TJ' last='Nixon'] and Brown commit [player_tooltip player_id='37506' first='James' last='Towers']. When Brunswick five-star [player_tooltip player_id='16386' first='Lucas' last='Garcia'] (Virginia) buried an empty-netter with 1:26 remaining, it seemed the Bruins might close it out, but Avon Old Farms refused to go quietly and made the Bruins sweat. Avon's [player_tooltip player_id='177091' first='Peter' last='Nelson'] (Franklin & Marshall) scored his sixth goal to tie things up with 33 seconds left, before Giuriceo delivered the game-winning blast to secure the win in regulation. Remarkably, it marked Brunswick's eighth one-goal victory among its 14 wins.   As talent-laden as the game was, Nelson and Giuriceo were undoubtedly the two stars of the day, so it feels fitting to feature these two:    Back home in his native Fairfield County, Nelson caught fire on Wednesday afternoon, scoring four of the Winged Beavers' first five goals, in addition to the second half tallies that made it 7-7 and 11-11. Frequently matched up with an Ivy-bound shortstick, Nelson shook him and got through the teeth of the defense on multiple coaches. The 6-foot-2 middie secured the hat trick with a hesi move, going left to right, raising his stick high above his head, then firing in a low shot. On his fourth, he got back to the middle and scored on an awkward yet violent release, before getting open on his fifth off of ball movement and putting a sidearm shot high. Nelson pulled another hesi on the goal to make it 11-11, rolling back to his left. In a high-pressure environment on the road against the No. 1 team in the country, Nelson couldn't miss and was arguably the most dominant player on the field. Although it wasn't always pretty, it was effective, and a performance that left a lasting impression.     Having watched a bevy of Brunswick's live streams this spring, Giuriceo has proven to be a force out of the midfield. However, Wednesday may have been his most noteworthy showing, and not just for his game-winning goal. With a sturdy 5'9 build and skill set that somewhat resembles former Brunswick middie Leo Hoffman, Giuriceo's athleticism and footwork allow him to put a ton of pressure on opposing defenses at all times. From there, his release is a thing of beauty and utterly unpredictable, often leaving the Avon goalie guessing like many other keepers have when tasked with stopping Giuriceo's shots. He netted the Bruins' opening goal on a nasty jumper, then added another three goals in the second half, showing off his range, explosiveness, and the palpable energy with which he plays.    Salisbury Catches Fire At The Right Time   Ranked No. 6 heading into the season, this spring has been rather up-and-down for the Crimson Knights. To a degree, this season has somewhat resembled that of Penn State: they've dealt with injuries to their star player (and more), took a head-scratching loss or two early on, but have started to get hot when it matters most.   On Wednesday, Tom Spinella's bunch made the trip to Taft to take on a Rhino squad that had won its last four games — including a big win over Choate — after dropping consecutive games to Deerfield and Brunswick. Salisbury, meanwhile, entered the matchup having won five of its last six, namely a big OT win over Hill Academy, a confidence-boosting overtime win that followed a heart-breaking OT loss on the road at Lawrenceville.   After trailing 2-0 early, Salisbury responded admirably and came away with the 9-8 victory, fending off Taft's late comeback attempt and getting hat trick showings from its talented underclassmen, freshman [player_tooltip player_id='172904' first='Keegan' last='Luey'] and sophomore midfielder [player_tooltip player_id='168590' first='Owen' last='Pawlowski'].   Although the Crimson Knights aren't in contention for a NE West title at this point in the season, their ability to regroup and pick off some big wins looks encouraging heading into Friday night's home tilt with Brunswick, which will help dictate seeding for next weekend's Prep Nationals with 'Wick, Deerfield, and Lawrenceville. In addition, Salisbury will close out the regular season with a tilt at Deerfield on Wednesday.   Founder's League & NE West 1 Standings Update With league records in parentheses, here's a look at the NE West 1 and Founder's League heading into this weekend's games, with the latter once again set to play a postseason tournament. Right now, Deerfield and Avon Old Farms look to be duking it out for a NE West 1 championship on Saturday afternoon. However, nothing's straightforward, considering the reality that each program will have its work cut out for it on Wednesday, when AOF will meet Taft and Deerfield will clash with Salisbury.
