New Balance Underclass Games: Standouts from Philly Tryouts

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>On Wednesday, June 18th, players competed in Blue Bell, PA to qualify for the Philly region's underclassmen games, sponsored by Corrigan Sports Enterprises in conjunction with New Balance. As evaluators circled the fields at Centre Square Park, it wasn't just about highlight-reel plays or flashy stats. True standouts were the ones who did what they "do" best &amp; they did it <em>relentlessly</em>. Whether you're a scorer, lockdown defender, a hard-nosed midfielder between the lines, or a FOGO, you don't need to play hero ball to be seen. You need to <em>own</em> your role.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>This wasn't about becoming the next Jim Brown, Brodie Merrill, Lyle Thompson, Matt Rambo, or Liam Entenmann in one day. It was about showing who you already are &amp; how well you do it. If you're an energy guy, lead the sideline &amp; scrap for loose balls. If you're a dodger, draw slides. He can assist in a pass-first, distributor role with complimentary crease pairings. Michael brings some swagger to the field knowing his role to help the team win. He is picking it up quickly &amp; has the potential to work in any system. Dukes entered play seeded No. 17 in the 25-team field &amp; finished 4-2 overall, defeating BBL (NJ), 6-3, for ninth place after qualifying for the playoffs. Mason ended up earning 2nd Team All-World at the Attack position. He has a high lax IQ &amp; can work himself inside with a strong bull dodge &amp; rip it from the right wing. His skillset looks trustworthy on the attack just as much as he can be a horse in the midfield with his size! Ben has a strong sweep where he can get to the middle &amp; shoot over defending poles. He mostly uses over-the-top mechanics that help him blow it by goalies at the higher level or test the surface to keep them guessing. TJ kept timing things out the front while winning the whistle! He is an aggressive scrapper at the X &amp; is extremely battle-tested. McDermott is someone who can change the course of a game in the blink of an eye. He pushes tempo on the 4-on-3 break while keeping in mind defensive &amp; subbing responsibilities. TJ is well-coached &amp; works hard! He continued to impress at tryouts finishing at every level of the offense. Van Bastelaar is a threat inside-out, on the run, &amp; shooting step-downs. He scored 1 goal in an 8-7 win over the Fords to help EA share the Regular season Inter-Ac title for the first time in 27 years. McGrath was able to find himself scoring again weeks later against Malvern in the PAISAA semi-finals. Michael later was credited with scooping up 3 groundballs in an April contest vs GA. He is deceptive in his dodging up top &amp; comes out of his moves loaded to shoot. Olender can also shake things up &amp; get mixy behind the goal from an attack position! He regularly produced for the USA top 50 Sallies (16-2) including games vs nationally known programs such as Malvern, PA; Chaminade, NY; &amp; Upper Arlington, OH. Zach has adequate hand-eye coordination &amp; the ability to haul in passes while cutting. He changes levels with his shots &amp; is almost automatic in the mid-range. Strohmeier is no slouch on defense &amp; will get back to protect the break. He is valuable in transition as an equally effective midfielder who can play both ways. He is predominantly used as a short-stick defensive midfielder but has skills to develop offensively. Joey had a notable goal in a tight win over Germantown Academy 7-5 in late April this past season. He is aggressive on the ball &amp; will take away the middle of the field with the alley dodges. Schreiber has fundamental footwork to get the top side &amp; plays hips denying any rollback. He demonstrates the ability to use his physical frame putting bodies on the floor. Joey is a physical beast on the field &amp; is excellent at guarding the ball behind the goal. He is part of a terrific tandem of shorties that could help the Blue Devils fight for an Inter-Ac crown. Ricky is a left-handed midfielder who has PIAA experience &amp; has been crowned a State Champion in DE for Lacrosse &amp; a finalist in wrestling! He is a dynamic athlete who can shoot on the run or with his feet set. Jewell is valuable on offense &amp; defense bringing a grinders mindset to the field. He is explosive out of his dodge &amp; fights to get to the middle of the field for higher percentage plays. Ricky is resilient in a scrum often coming out with the ground balls &amp; making plays to advance it quickly in the clear. He is a patient player who gets to his spots rather than forcing the issue. Jewell is a solid feeder from the left wing &amp; truly understands the game. He is a familiar face who has made the Philly Regional Team before. Ricky is a dangerous weapon in an all-star format because of the willingness to play defense first while remaining a threat in transition or staying to play on offense. Pennekamp might be an alternate choice as a youngster in the local talent market but he shows the poise of a pro in the cage. Few understand the mental &amp; physical demands of a goalkeeper but when you look into his eyes you can tell he has <em>"it"</em>! Grant accepts the challenges of his position while bringing a confident mindset to his team. Curry shows great control of his stick side which is proving to be 85%-90% of the battle in this era of sidearm shooting. Philly also won the Burn &amp; Highlight Division Title(s) respectively in 2023. The (2023) Burn team beat Upstate, NY 8 to 6 in the final on a Sunday to finish in undefeated fashion. In 2024, the Philly Command team went 7-0 in their division at the tournament en route to a 9 to 6 championship victory over Upstate, NY.
