As we inch closer to games starting up in the Garden State, let’s take a look at some guys who should continue to be effective this spring.

Coming off a Group 2 state championship last spring, Summit is loaded up and ready to go once again, with its previously young core of players now older and wiser. Offensively, it starts with senior
Daniel Flaim

, who had a terrific 2023 season, leading the team in goals (39) and points (57) while finishing second on the team with 18 assists and helping the Hilltoppers to a 15-4 season. Summit won its 5th straight Union County Tournament championship against Westfield in a 10-9 barnburner, with Flaim posting two goals and an assist. In a 9-7 win over Wall in the Group 2 state final, Flaim tallied two goals. A Villanova signee and 3-star recruit, Flaim can do it all. He has great stick skills and can use both hands fluidly as a passer and shooter. When dodging, he displays excellent footwork and one of his best traits is that he always keeps his head up, looking for cutters or an open man on the back side of the defense. He works well in a man-up unit with his ability to shoot from range and thread the needle to a teammate. On the other side of the ball, Flaim can hold his own on the defensive side and is very active and physical when defending on clears. He was awarded 1st Team All-Group 2 honors for his efforts and will look to emulate that this year.

Yet another member of Lawrenceville’s defensive core is
Harrison Vassel

, a 3-star Lehigh commit and a very well-rounded defender. When going one-on-one, he breaks down, stays patient, and uses his body well against his matchup. Paired with great footwork and a quick change of direction, Vassel doesn’t offer his matchup many chances to affect the game. He can defend anywhere on the field and locks down his opponent routinely. He works well in transition because he has a unique ability to cause turnovers with various takeaway checks and great ground ball and stick skills to affect the game on the offensive end as well. He’s not the most physical player, but he’s smart about what he does, and that usually leads to good things for his team. He should be a strong complementary defenseman for Lawrenceville this year and could continue that into his Lehigh career.

A joy to watch, Carfello is a stud in cage for the Ironmen, and the 3-star St. Joe’s signee has all of the tools to excel at the next level. He is extremely athletic and makes incredibly acrobatic saves in goal, whether it is a kick save or a ball deflecting off of his shaft. He has good footwork and quick reactions on shots in close, and when shooters change planes, he’s able to track the ball well. He throws darts and stays active as much as possible on clears. Carfello was the captain of the defensive unit for Don Bosco Prep last season and put on some brilliant performances as the Ironmen finished 15-5. They captured their 3rd straight Bergen County Tournament title, beating Ridgewood 7-6 after trailing going into the 4th quarter, with Carfello finishing with nine saves in the win. Don Bosco would go on to lose in the Non-Public Group A semifinals to Delbarton 12-1, and Carfello would finish the season Carfello with a career-high in saves with 180, passing 2022 when he recorded 175 saves and was awarded 3rd Team All-State, according to NJ.com. The Ironmen are on a mission this spring and will look to rebound and get back to the state title game.

McCeney, a Vermont commit and 3-star recruit, shares the same midfield line as Flaim for Summit. A two-handed player, he’s super quick and shifty, always keeping his feet moving. When dodging, he is very elusive and has a quick first step, often losing his defender with a spin move to create space to either pass or shoot. When shooting, he can bang it on the run or take a step down with good power and placement on his shots, making it difficult for defenders, especially when he changes planes. McCeney finished his ’23 season with 29 goals and 42 points (just behind Flaim in both categories), earning him 2nd Team All-State and 1st Team All-Group 2, according to NJ.com.

Seton Hall Prep has been a top team in New Jersey for a while now, and it’s due in part to guys like Schweiger. He isn’t the biggest attackman, but what he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in speed. He’s a natural righty but can shoot and pass cleanly with both hands. When dodging he uses his good footwork and quick change of direction to create space from defenders at X and then either find an open teammate or finish on the doorstep. Scoring 34 goals last season, Schweiger works well without the ball in his stick and has good placement and a quick release after cutting off-ball. The Air Force commit doesn’t just score, he can also dish the rock. Last season he was 2nd on his team with 28 assists while tying for 2nd with 62 points, awarded 3rd Team All-Non-Public A recognition for his work at attack. Seton Hall Prep is the clear-cut alpha in Essex County, as the Pirates won their county tournament again and they were cruising at 16-0 coming off a one-goal win against Delbarton before losing 12-5 to a highly talented Malvern Prep (Pa.) squad. Seton Hall Prep would go on to lose to Delbarton 10-9 in the Non-Public Group A state title game, so the Pirates are out for vengeance this season, with Schweiger one to watch for a stacked SHP roster.

St. Augustine Prep will be looking to get back to the Non-Public Group A tournament again this season and it all starts with its stud attackmen bound for Delaware. The 6-foot, 200-pound lefty is set to be a force to be reckoned with this season after leading his team in goals (43), assists (20), and points (63) as a junior. Plenn is a strong dodger and plays with a certain physical presence that makes defenses not want to match up with him. He is strong enough to absorb stick checks and weak body contact on the way to the net, so if you are thinking of sliding on him, be well-prepared. One of his best qualities is that he keeps his head up, always looking for an open teammate if he’s unable to beat his matchup. Accompanied by a powerful dodge is his powerful shot, and he has proven that he doesn’t need much space to be a threat. He has a hard, accurate shot and changes planes to keep goaltenders guessing. The Delaware-bound 3-star helped his team advance to the Non-Public Group A semifinals where the Hermits eventually lost to Seton Hall Prep in a 18-4 drubbing in which Plenn tallied a goal. After the year, he earned himself 1st Team All Non-Public honor.
Princeton will look to bounce back this season after a tough ending to its 2023 season, having lost where three straight games to end the spring, including a Mercer County Tournament semifinal loss to Hun and a loss to Northern Highlands in the first round of North Jersey’s Group 3 state tournament. However, one of the bright spots was another great season from attackman
Patrick Kenah
Patrick

. He dazzled as he led his team in goals (68) and points (111) and finished 2nd in assists (43) as a junior to earn himself 1st Team All-Group 3 honors in the process, and he’ll look to build off of that performance this spring. If one thing is apparent, it’s that the Lafayette commit does not need much space to score at all. On so many of his goals, there’s a defender in a decent position, but he does a great job of taking advantage of the little room that he has earned in order to score. Kenah can dodge past his defender from X or work the two-man game, getting past his defender and doing a great job of finishing in-tight around the crease. He often utilizes several stick fakes to get goalies off-balance when on the doorstep with his superior stick handling, and he also works well off the ball with cuts and can find open space in the defense to set up opportunities.
