You can tell a lot about a player’s athleticism by watching his feet on defense, and Gantz’s speak volumes. He stays wide in his base and moves well enough to leave dodgers few angles to attack. When they do find a step, he has the upper-body strength to close the door with cross-checks and holds with the head of his stick. He’s not just a strong SSDM option; he’s a legitimate two-way midfielder. I saw glimpses when he escaped doubles in the clear, but his box-and-spring highlights made that side of his game even more apparent. Barrington used him frequently as the ball carrier in the two-man game, where he showed a strong feel for reading pick coverages. With a pick coming to him on the wing, he consistently set his defender up to get chipped, freeing his hands as he worked into the middle for a shot he could hammer home. When defenses switched, he was just as comfortable feeding the slipping picker on his way to the cage.
