This group features two short-stick defensive midfielders, including an uncommitted 2028, and three poles from the 2029 division who made their presence felt on Sunday.

You can tell a lot about a player's athleticism by watching his feet on defense, and Gantz's speak volumes. He stays wide in his base and moves well enough to leave dodgers few angles to attack. When they do find a step, he has the upper-body strength to close the door with cross-checks and holds with the head of his stick. He's not just a strong SSDM option; he's a legitimate two-way midfielder. I saw glimpses when he escaped doubles in the clear, but his box-and-spring highlights made that side of his game even more apparent. Barrington used him frequently as the ball carrier in the two-man game, where he showed a strong feel for reading pick coverages. With a pick coming to him on the wing, he consistently set his defender up to get chipped, freeing his hands as he worked into the middle for a shot he could hammer home. When defenses switched, he was just as comfortable feeding the slipping picker on his way to the cage.

It's pretty easy to circle Bruen's name in the book when you see the 6-foot-4 defender press out and overwhelm an attackman. He's a shark that detects blood in the water, sensing when to attack outside the box and when to chomp down on an exposed stick inside it. He knows when to flip the switch and attack, and when to stay patient and rely on sound positioning. When he settles in to defend, Bruen takes sharp, disciplined approaches, getting his tall frame low into an athletic stance. He keeps his stick extended to take away an attackman's strengths, throwing hard slaps topside and using cross-checks and V-holds when they try to work back the other way. He's grown into his frame well, pairing the feet to run with attackmen with the strength to make those checks and holds effective. He's mature off the ball, too, communicating his responsibilities loudly, showing and scraping back fluidly, and taking clean angles when he needs to slide in support.

A Swiss Army knife from north of the border? Sign me up. Lawrence played SSDM for Boston's Phinest over the weekend, but I could easily see him in a Zach Currier-type role. Off the wing on faceoffs, he had a knack for scooping loosies in traffic and turning them into transition opportunities. He also put together a couple of impressive one-man clears, showing the toughness to work through pressure and the feel to find space. He brings the Canadian offensive traits you'd expect: a strong offensive IQ, silky mitts, and a slick handle. Against NE Select, he hit a nasty hitch into a face dodge on the run, slipping between two defenders for an easy transition dunk. At SSDM, he looked comfortable, holding up with strong cross-checks, making himself tough to beat.

Hunter was the only freshman to earn Utah 4A First Team All-State honors last year, helping Waterford capture a state championship along the way. He first caught my eye Sunday when he pressed outside the box and stayed aggressive in Hilltop's matchup against Team Ten. There's a little bit of everything to like here. He's tough and physical, unafraid to deliver a hit when the opportunity presents itself, and strong on groundballs—he collected 73 across 16 games last spring. He also has a reliable stick in transition and a shot to go with it. He leans toward the takeaway side of defending, and there are moments when I'd like to see him chase the stick a little less. More often than not, though, those checks seem to land. Keep Hunter on your radar—he has the tools to be the next Utah-bred defender to break through nationally.

New Perkiomen head coach Tom Mariano snagged a difference-maker at LSM in Whitaker. The 6-foot-4 Savannah (Ga.) native plays like a midfielder with a pole, using his stick skills to navigate pressure and push transition. His summer highlight tape is full of goals that show just how dangerous he can be on that side of the field. On Sunday, he stood out for the space he covered on the backside in settled defense and his ability to get his stick into passing lanes on the man-down unit. There's room to grow on the ball, but his combination of size and athleticism gives him plenty to work with. Even when a dodger creates a step, getting beyond Whitaker's reach is another challenge.
