About Ayden
Expert Analysis

Ayden Matthews is the definition of an inside-out offensive weapon, capable of impacting the game on the offensive end. Ayden’s lightning-quick release paired with elite shot accuracy makes him a constant scoring threat, while his competitive edge & spatial awareness translate seamlessly to the field game. Matthews’ handle is exceptional in traffic, allowing him to finish tight, while showing advanced creativity as a scorer who can beat defenders with both his feet & his stick. He is equally dangerous dodging from the wing or operating as a secondary initiator, where his vision & willingness to move the ball keep defenses honest. Ayden thrives on the extra-man, using quick decision-making & a deceptive release to expose rotations. He plays with toughness, embraces contact, & consistently makes the right play — whether that’s burying his own look or delivering a selfless feed to the doorstep. Matthews has served as a captain for Orangeville & Team Ontario indoors. The Canadian Box influence is obvious in his poise, competitiveness, & feel for timing, all of which fit perfectly within The Big Red’s offensive identity. Verbally committed to Penn State.

On the surface, Matthews’ commitment to Penn State — where his brother Liam is a redshirt sophomore — might not seem like much of a surprise. However, it was certainly a splash for the Nittany Lions to snag the No. 7 recruit in the class, and I believe that his ranking would have been even higher if he had participated in the recruiting circuit. Unless you watched the Big Red in the spring or followed Jr. A box, you may not be as familiar with what Matthews brings to the table.
After dazzling for the Orangeville Northmen, Matthews’ recruitment centered around Maryland, Ohio State, and Penn State, his last visit of the three. According to multiple sources, the Terps were the other major player for the lefty’s services and made quite an impression on Matthews. Penn State won out in the end, and Matthews was the cherry on top for an excellent ’27 recruiting cycle in State College. Given the fact that Matthews was the third left-handed Canadian offensive weapon to jump on board, I’ll be intrigued to see how they make that work in a few years, though that’s one of those so-called champagne problems for Jeff Tambroni and John Haus.

‘ box background has translated seamlessly to the field, making him one of the premier prospects in the 2027 class. The younger brother of Liam Matthews—arguably one of the best players in the OJLL this summer and a top scorer for Penn State in the spring—Ayden has clearly inherited the same competitive edge and scoring touch. Despite being one of the youngest players on the floor, he has already made his mark at the Minto Cup with 11 points through the first three games, proving that age is no barrier when skill and IQ are this advanced.
The lefty brings a true box mentality to the field game. He thrives in tight spaces, scoring inside with defenders draped all over him, while also stretching defenses with a deceptive release that beats goalies from range. His creativity allows him to generate offense from situations that most players would reset, and his toughness ensures he’s never shying away from physical play. With his blend of skill, vision, and finishing ability, Matthews projects as the type of player who won’t just contribute—he’ll consistently fill the stat sheet and elevate his teammates at the next level.
