Udell just keeps getting better, steadily raising his stock ever since he made a commitment to Michigan last fall. A few months removed from a 52-goal, 38-assist junior season, he shined on the penultimate day of his final summer event, posting two goals and an assist in a commanding win. He went after a fellow Big Ten commit on more than one occasion, and the result was positive. He just has a tremendous feel for the game and a knack for knowing when and how to attack his defender. Even when it looks like he was bottled up, he got his hands free and tossed a pretty underhanded assist. I’m bullish on the kind of career Udell could have with the Wolverines.

Udell is the QB of the Staples offense, doing most of his damage from below GLE as a dodger. He can dodge to score or feed, but his best attribute is his feel for how the defense is playing him. On his first goal of the day, Udell started from behind the net, dodging to his right. As he pushed above the goal line, Wilton sent a help defender toward him. Most high school attackmen would try to roll away from the pressure, step back, or move the ball off the double immediately. But Udell saw that the help defender wasn’t sliding particularly hard to him, it was more of a show to try and get him to pass. Udell re-dodged, got topside on his man, and face-dodged past the weak slider to score from the middle of the field. It was a great bit of field sense by him. He finished with a pair of goals on the day.

The versatility and well-roundedness of Udell stood out, and he showed equal ability to contribute at either midfield or attack, making him an intriguing piece at the next level. The right hand is strong, and Udell is capable of finishing from a variety of angles and ranges. The Michigan commit showed off his two-handedness, an increasing rarity among recruits these days. He displays good ability to separate from defenders and is a capable dodger and feeder as well.
