Several of Long Island’s prospects have thrived in these matchups, so let’s take a look at these six players from Nassau County who have gotten off to an excellent start.
In the first couple of games, Melkonian has showcased why he’s one of the top face-off prospects on Long Island, if not the entire country. His exits are very clean and he often wins it to himself without any trouble. Along with his quick hands, Melkonian is one of the most athletic players you’ll find on Long Island. He was one of the area’s best wide receivers during the football season, and his speed and acceleration translate very well to the lacrosse field. Melkonian can blow by defenders in between the lines and create transition opportunities. In a matchup against Cold Spring Harbor, Melkonian took complete control of the game. He went 21-of-26 at the X and had a crucial goal to help South Side beat the Seahawks 13-9. Melkonian goes to battle against Luke Cascadden and defending state champions Garden City on Wednesday.

Disque is a senior for Syosset but will be taking a PG next year before he heads to Johns Hopkins, having committed over the summer. But despite Syosset being 0-3, Disque has been nothing short of dominant to start his last ride with the Braves, posting 12 goals along with three assists so far this season. Disque is a very physical dodger and loves to get into his defender to help himself eventually improve his shooting angle and get his hands free to let it fly.
In his first game against East Islip, we saw his catch-and-shoot ability, but we also saw his ability to score off of havoc. Disque was able to pick up ground balls and find open space to score a couple of his goals. Against South Side, he was matched up with Providence commit Patrick Mullin Patrick Mullin 6’5″ | 210 lbs | D | Right Hand South Side | 2024 NY all game with a quick slide coming behind him, and Disque did a great job keeping his head up to make decisions, while still using his size and footwork to win his matchup.

Garden City breezed through its first three games with convincing wins against Farmingdale, Mount Sinai, and Wantagh. In those contests, Carson Kraus Carson Kraus 5’10” | M Garden City | 2024 NY scored 14 goals for the Trojans. The Hamilton commit has quickly developed into one of the top shooters in Nassau County. With the help of his offense, Kraus found himself open for time and room shooting opportunities and didn’t disappoint. Kraus also took advantage of poor defensive approaches and had success scoring off of ball movement. He has done a great job without the ball to put himself in threatening shooting spots, but he’s also formidable in the invert game as well, scoring off a dodge from X against Mount Sinai.

Massapequa has a very young team across the board this season. Mistakes have been made here and there but Jannotte has done more than just hold it down in net. In his first four games of the season, he has 62 saves for the Chiefs and has yet to allow double-digits in any game while posting a save percentage of 63 percent. Against a talented Syosset offense, he registered 12 saves in the rivalry win. In that game, he displayed very good positioning in net along with a ton of athleticism. Jannotte was very active, winning multiple races to the end line to help his team get possession. With a two-goal lead and under five minutes to go against the Braves, Jannotte would step up late and record three big saves on high shots to help the Chiefs hold on for the win.

When watching Cold Spring Harbor play South Side, it was Ryan McGloin Ryan McGloin 6’2″ | M Cold Spring Harbor | 2024 NY who stood out most for the Seahawks. A throwback two-way midfielder who gets it done everywhere, McGloin had three goals against the Cyclones while scoring in different ways. His first goal came when they were man-down and McGloin blazed right past a double team, went to the rack, and finished. His second tally came on a low left-handed rip, where he pinged the low off-stick corner. Finally, his third goal came off a split dodge where he shook his defender and cashed in on the high bouncer. The senior headed to Middlebury is an all-around athlete. He picked up a couple of ground balls and played steady defense when needed, too. He’s a very important piece to a Cold Spring Harbor team looking to win a Class D state title.

The Cyclones have jumped out to a 4-0 start, and DiPietro has been excellent, racking up nine goals and seven assists. The senior midfielder is one of the quickest players you’ll see in Nassau County, and watching DiPietro play, it’s clear that very few short-stick defensive midfielders will be able to stay with him this season. Proven to be a threat with both hands, he has a great first step and has consistently beaten his defender from wherever he’s dodging. DiPietro can get down the alley with either hand and finish on the run, or he can go hard down the alley and create a ton of space with his quick rollback and get his hands free to hammer home a quick shot. He might not be the biggest midfielder, but he’s shown that he can shoot the ball very hard and accurately throughout these first four games.
