New York is rich in high school lacrosse talent and history, spanning from Buffalo and Plattsburgh down to Montauk, Long Island. Lacrosse is deeply embedded in the culture here, but one of the sport's most under-appreciated and often overlooked regions is the Hudson Valley, also known as Section 1. Westchester County, Putnam County, Rockland County, and Dutchess County make up Section 1. This area is uniquely positioned between four powerhouse lacrosse regions—Upstate New York to the north, Long Island to the south, Connecticut to the east, and New Jersey to the west. Because of its location, Section 1 doesn't always receive the same recognition as its neighboring hotbeds. However, to lacrosse purists, this region is home to some of North America's oldest and most tradition-rich programs.

Amid these historic programs, one team has been making waves in recent years, disrupting the established order—Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, New York. Once a team that other schools either ignored or scheduled for their senior nights, Greeley has transformed into a rising powerhouse in Section 1 and in New York State. With a growing passion for the sport within the town, a deep pipeline of players produced by one of the top youth and modified programs in the state, dedicated parents and parent coaches, and a program committed to excellence, Horace Greeley is determined to carve out its legacy in Section 1 lacrosse and New York State.

Horace Greeley lacrosse was founded in 1975 and is celebrating its 50th season this year. In the program's half-century history, before the 2024 season, Greeley had reached the Section 1 Championship three times. In 1992, 1993, and 2003. While the program lacked a consistent winning tradition in its early years, they have still produced many standout players who went on to play at the collegiate level, including:

A major turning point for Greeley lacrosse came in 2022 with the arrival of a new coach Ben Potash. Potash brought a winning pedigree, having previously coached at the powerhouse program Darien High School—a school with a deeply rooted tradition of lacrosse excellence. His experience made him the ideal leader to instill a championship mindset in a program hungry for success.

Under Potash's leadership, Horace Greeley has seen remarkable growth each season. In 2022, the team reached the Section Quarterfinals. In 2023, they advanced to the Section Semifinals. And in 2024, they achieved a historic milestone—reaching their first Section Championship game since 2003. With a rapidly improving program, a committed coaching staff, and a hungry roster, Greeley lacrosse is quickly transforming into a force to be reckoned with.
