Final 2026 Rankings: A New No. 1 Tops the Prep Top 200 (FREE)

In a few weeks, recently graduated seniors from the Class of 2026 will head to their respective college programs and enter a new era of college athletics, one in which student-athletes are afforded five years of eligibility rather than the four they committed to when they first made their college decisions.

As a result, immediate playing time may be harder to come by for many freshmen, as older teammates now have an additional year of eligibility and more experienced players remain on campus longer than originally expected.

We're pleased to unveil the first-ever Top 200 — which can be seen by subscribers here —a forward-looking projection of each player's potential impact at the next level rather than a reflection of past success in high school and club lacrosse. At Prep Network, rankings are less about what players have accomplished and more about what they might become. With the introduction of the new 5-for-5 eligibility model, we've spent more time evaluating college rosters, production, and projected depth charts to account for the additional year of eligibility that could impact opportunities for underclassmen.

An incoming freshman at Virginia, former Brunswick (Conn.) and Prime Time attackman Lucas Garcia Lucas Garcia 5'11" | 170 lbs | A/M | Right Hand Brunswick School | 2026 #1 Nation CT vaults from No. 6 to No. 1 and becomes the second consecutive UVA first-year to earn top honors after returning All-American Brendan Millon finished at the top a year ago. As explosive as any offensive weapon in the class and capable of creating offense from just about anywhere, Garcia helped lead a stellar 'Wick squad to a Prep Nationals title in 2026 and was a clutch performer for a team that finished 17-3 while going an astonishing 11-1 in one-goal games.

Although he's expected to eventually cement himself as an attackman during his career, Garcia will join a roster that already features three returning All-Americans on offense in the Millon brothers and lefty Ryan Colsey. At the very least, Garcia should have an opportunity to compete for a role on UVA's first midfield line early in his tenure in Charlottesville, and he has plenty of experience playing middie from earlier in his high school and club career.

Holding steady at No. 2 is a left-handed weapon in Duke-bound attackman/midfielder James Gillis James Gillis 6'2" | M/A | Left Hand Chaminade | 2026 #2 Nation NY of Chaminade (N.Y.) and LI Express. Entering September 1, 2024, Gillis and Dylan Faison — who ultimately enrolled at Notre Dame midyear this past winter, effectively making him a 2025 recruit — were widely viewed as the 1A and 1B prospects in the 2026 class. Gillis, a tenacious competitor with tremendous skills and positional versatility, was limited to 11 games as a senior due to a back injury that required surgery this summer, but still posted 20 goals and 22 assists after putting up 42 goals and 19 assists as a junior. It's hard to say exactly where he'll line up at the next level, but for Duke, that's a champagne problem to have.

Jumping into the No. 3 spot is another lefty stalwart in Notre Dame defenseman Joe Ligas Joe Ligas 6'1" | 185 lbs | D | Left Hand Whitney | 2026 #3 Nation CA of Whitney (Calif.), just outside Sacramento. A shutdown lefty cover man who starred for ADVNC and the West Coast Starz, Ligas was originally ranked outside the Top 10 but continued to separate himself over time, erasing five-star attackmen while facing some of the very best competition on the club circuit. There's no doubt he'll face a significant step up in competition at the next level, but there's also no questioning how fundamentally sound and athletic he is and how many boxes he checks as an on-ball and off-ball defender. Of course, his résumé speaks for itself, with Ligas earning MVP honors at last summer's National All-Star Games and Defensive MVP honors at the PLL Combine.

Moving up 14 spots to No. 4 is Army defender AJ Theodorakakos AJ Theodorakakos 6'1" | 215 lbs | D | Left Hand Penfield | 2026 #4 Nation NY of Penfield (N.Y.) and Sweetlax, who has proven to be just as difficult to beat as his name is to pronounce correctly — if not more. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound lefty from Rochester committed to the Black Knights just hours into the service academies' contact period two summers ago, choosing to serve his country rather than waiting to hear from virtually every major program when Sept. 1 arrived. A thumper in every sense, he's a perfect fit for Army, which has quietly stacked Top 100 defensive recruits in recent recruiting cycles. With 'instant impact' written all over him, he has already arrived in West Point after racking up 27 points, 130 groundballs, and 142 caused turnovers in four years on varsity.

Duke-bound Bedford (N.H.) midfielder Bennett Matthews Bennett Matthews 6'1" | 185 lbs | M | Right Hand Bedford | 2026 #5 Nation NH rounds out the top five after being named USA Lacrosse National Player of the Year following a senior season in which he tallied 71 goals and 50 assists. A freak athlete at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, Matthews was sensational on the summer circuit for a loaded NH Tomahawks midfield and was also named Gatorade Football Player of the Year in New Hampshire for his excellence as a quarterback. A two-way force who has consistently impacted games on both ends of the field, Matthews will be one of the more intriguing players to watch in Durham as Duke finds a role for another elite athlete in a program that has historically been well-stocked with five-star talent and athleticism at midfield.
