Following up on last week's rankings release, we've been highlighting some of the biggest risers this week, putting a spotlight on two new five-star recruits and three '26s on offense who aren't too far behind. Today, we're focusing on the defensive side of the ball, where these five players have shown incredible year-over-year development and look poised to keep climbing the rankings.

Popping on film, Allen made unbelievable strides as a junior and was one of the most dominant defenders in all of New England, earning US Lacrosse All-American honors for the Crimson Knights in 2025. The Danvers (Mass.) native served as a shutdown defender from his role at LSM and not only erased some of the more heralded midfielders in the region, but flat-out embarrassed them. With an elite stick serving as Allen's marquee attribute, he has shown a penchant for throwing nasty takeaway checks and making momentum-swinging plays with the ball in his stick. That's always been a huge part of his game, but it quickly became clear that Allen learned that there's a time and place to throw those home-run checks. On the undersized side, he's been praised as a weight room warrior, and will need to get bigger and stronger between now and when he's ready to play for the Terps. That being said, I love how he projects at the next level and am looking forward to seeing what he has in store as a 'Bury senior.

Baxter was one of the nation's most dramatically improved '26s from his recruiting summer to June of his rising senior summer, a surge that ultimately sparked a flip from Colgate to Virginia. Constantly around the ball, he has a knack for putting opposing midfielders on a highlight reel with outrageous takeaway checks, yet he's just as likely to knock down passes or jump passing lanes for interceptions. His hands and instincts are excellent, timing everything cleanly before pushing transition and shining with the ball in his stick. He's also an asset on the wings, and Brunswick will lean on him even more there after losing key contributors to graduation at the face-off X and on the defensive end. As a junior, he posted a massive stat line that included 44 caused turnovers — and he did it against one of the toughest schedules in the country.

Simply put, Creech was an animal as a junior, yet I can't help but think that he's just scratching the surface. The Tampa (Fla.) native is a talented three-year varsity hockey player — which is no easy feat up there — so he joins the lacrosse team a bit later than his peers but doesn't skip a beat. A big, strong, and athletic physical specimen, Creech doesn't need to throw many checks and seldom gets beat, playing lights-out 1v1 defense and relying on his high-level footwork, physicality, and superb position play. He has evolved into a super reliable No. 1 cover guy, and the argument can be made that his best lacrosse is ahead of him, which is exciting for Princeton. With another year of development, he'll be ready to contribute early on in the Ivy League.

Projecting as a No. 2 or No. 3 cover guy at the next level, Strazzini looks the part of a classic Gerry Byrne recruit. He's instinctual and cerebral down low, sitting in his stance and making life difficult for his matchup, but arguably even more impactful off-ball and as a sliding defender. Strazzini is physical and disruptive, yet plays disciplined and under control, which isn't always the case with big defenders. Praised for knowing how to use his size to his advantage at a young age, he was a priority Ivy League recruit who flipped from Cornell to Harvard in July. Heading into his senior season, he'll finally step into a role that will involve him taking on No. 1 attackmen for a defense that lost a five-star defender to Notre Dame, a longstick middie to Princeton, and a goalie to Georgetown.

An outstanding athlete who is incredibly confrontational on-ball, Zeitlin has been playing with conviction as of late, having performed admirably after transferring from Poly Prep (N.Y.) to Deerfield (Mass.) before his junior season. He's always providing a spark and setting the tone with his physicality, crowbarring his man to death or catching his guy slipping with a caused turnover off of a wrap check. Zeitlin is perfectly comfortable being left out on an island and lights out at and below the goal line, where he's just as effective as a top-tier longpole. It's been noticeable just how rare it is to see an opposing player dodge Zeitlin multiple times once they deal with him 1v1 the first time around, which is the sign of a high-caliber SSDM. With the ball in his stick, he's elusive in the open field and electric in punt return style clears, so he's more than capable of contributing offensively in transition.
