Maryland continues to be one of the deepest pipelines for defensive talent in the country, and the 2027 class shows why. Several Division I programs have already loaded up on Maryland defenders, trusting the toughness and IQ developed in the state's elite high school and club systems. Michigan secured two Maryland natives in [player_tooltip player_id='165664' first='Grayson' last='Boone'] and Danny Weller (Deerfield), while Delaware added three in [player_tooltip player_id='129550' first='Cooper' last='Sinclair'], [player_tooltip player_id='121440' first='Andrew' last='Chiperfield'], and [player_tooltip player_id='165658' first='Gray' last='Stangle']. Navy landed the biggest haul with four commitments—[player_tooltip player_id='121406' first='Grayson' last='Foa'], [player_tooltip player_id='143485' first='Jackson' last='Hines'], [player_tooltip player_id='165660' first='Brady' last='LaRochelle'], and Bharat Mahanti—and Towson stayed local with [player_tooltip player_id='165662' first='Ben' last='Bowman'] as its lone in-state pickup.
The Delaware commit checks every box for what the Blue Hens want in a long-stick midfielder. Chiperfield brings size, athleticism, ground-ball ability, and strong stick skills that make him dangerous all over the field. With experience in two nationally ranked programs—Landon in the spring and Next Level in the fall and summer—he's only going to keep improving.

Chiperfield is a menace between the lines and a difference-maker on the wings of face-offs. He's excellent at using his pole to hockey the ball out of scrums, sparking transition and generating extra possessions. In the open field, he's confident with the ball, whether drawing slides to open teammates or pulling up to shoot himself. Defensively, he's aggressive and disruptive, using his length and athleticism to land risky checks, slide with authority, and create turnovers. With his two-way impact and proven production, Chiperfield looks like a future centerpiece for Delaware's defense.

Boone established himself as one of the best cover defenders in Maryland public schools this spring. At Broadneck, he consistently matched up against tough competition, holding his own against Severna Park, South River, and delivering a flawless performance in the state championship against Urbana. Boone carried that momentum into the summer with the Annapolis Hawks, where his play against elite competition earned him an offer from Michigan.

Boone's calling card is his lockdown ability in 1-on-1 situations, which he showcased at The Countdown against some of the nation's best. Beyond individual matchups, he brings strong team defense, showing excellent recognition of when to support teammates and perfectly timing his slides to shut down threats. With his blend of cover skills and defensive IQ, Boone looks like a high-level addition to Michigan's back line.

Delaware was fortunate to land [player_tooltip player_id='165658' first='Gray' last='Stangle'] as the first LSM in its 2027 class. Stangle combines athleticism and height with a disruptive defensive style that makes him difficult to beat. His most impressive trait is his 1v1 takeaway ability. Dodgers are forced to vary their pace to have any chance—if they don't, his quick feet and length allow him to mirror them step-for-step before using aggressive poke, over-the-head, or trail checks to strip the ball.

Beyond his takeaway defense, Stangle is reliable on ground balls and skilled in scrums, using slick stick work to secure possession. In the clearing game, he plays with confidence, making the right reads and moving the ball under pressure. With his size, athleticism, and ability to force turnovers, Stangle brings the exact edge Delaware looks for in a high-level LSM.

Navy secured [player_tooltip player_id='165660' first='Brady' last='LaRochelle'] early, taking advantage of the Service Academies' ability to contact players before other colleges. A physical defender with solid footwork and strong team-defense instincts, LaRochelle brings a hard-nosed style that translates well to the next level. His greatest strength is his physicality—he initiates contact to knock dodgers off their path, and when he gets his hands and body into an opponent, he can shut them down, even against more athletic matchups.

LaRochelle also stands out for his defensive IQ. He understands slide packages, takes sharp angles on rotations, and consistently spots vulnerable offensive players to force double teams. A product of the Annapolis Hawks, he joins a long line of Maryland natives making the jump to Division I. With his physical edge and team-first style, LaRochelle looks like a natural fit for Navy's defensive identity.

Towson stayed close to home and landed St. Paul's product [player_tooltip player_id='165662' first='Ben' last='Bowman'] last week. While he doesn't bring the same size as some other Division I defenders, Bowman makes up for it with instincts, athleticism, and a high lacrosse IQ. His biggest strength lies in his off-ball defense, where he consistently finds ways to flip possessions—whether it's jumping passing lanes, winning ground ball scrums, or sliding at the perfect moment to disrupt an offense.

On-ball, Bowman has solid footwork and positioning, though he's still refining the physical edge to match up with bigger, stronger dodgers. With added strength and continued development, he'll become even tougher to beat in individual matchups. Towson is getting a smart, scrappy defender who thrives in team systems and has the athletic upside to grow into a reliable piece of their back line.
