The lefty LSM who stood out for Team Baltimore at the New Balance All-America Games was Declan Vaughan. He impressed with his fundamentally sound approach to defense, rarely overextending and always staying composed in his matchups. Vaughan takes smart, calculated risks and consistently finds ways to generate turnovers between the lines. He's automatic on ground balls and knows how to flip the field quickly. In transition, he understands his role—drawing defenders and creating space for his offense without forcing the issue. Vaughan's poise and precision make him a safe bet for an LSM in the 2027 class.

The LSM that had me double-checking my notes after goal that involved a slick under move against the Southwest team at New Balance Games was Joseph Macaluso. He consistently made his presence felt on both ends of the field, whether it was throwing a textbook over-the-head check for a caused turnover or making smart, physical slides against Baltimore. Macaluso has the ideal frame for a long stick midfielder and brings the kind of athleticism you'd expect from a multi-sport athlete. He's calm and confident with the ball, pushes transition with poise, and isn't afraid to take a chance when the opportunity presents itself.

Aleo was constantly around the ball and making plays for Team Washington D.C. at the New Balance All-America Games. Athletic and skilled enough to run as an LSM, Aleo also has the IQ and poise to be trusted at close defense. He plays within the slide package, reads offenses well, and generates turnovers by timing his checks and using his body. When he causes a turnover, he's quick to the ground ball and smooth in transition. With his versatility, instincts, and toughness, Aleo is poised to make an impact at Bullis heading into his junior year.

New England's Tim Howard was one of the most physically imposing defenders at the event. Standing at 6'5” with serious strength, Howard immediately makes his presence felt. If you try to dodge against him, expect to get jammed two yards back—his physicality at the point of attack is no joke. Even if you manage to gain a step, his length gives him the ability to land punishing trail and over-the-head checks. Howard also showed his two-way potential, recording an assist in transition during a big moment against the Washington D.C. squad. He's a force— not to mention hard to miss.

Ferrin showed up all over the stat sheet for Team Southwest at the New Balance All-America Games, racking up multiple caused turnovers in a standout performance against Upstate. He's a strong athlete with good size, and what stood out most was his understanding of defensive schemes—he timed his slides perfectly and made sure shooters rarely got clean looks. Ferrin plays physical, has the athleticism to match footwork in space, and shows a high-level defensive IQ. He checks all the boxes of a next-level defender.

The defender who kept popping up in skip lanes and disrupting possessions at the New Balance All-America Games for Team Philadelphia was Cooper Schreiner. He was all over the field, causing chaos on man-down, hunting doubles, and picking off passes like a free safety. Schreiner has a knack for reading dodgers' body language and a high defensive IQ that helps him time his support slides perfectly. Whether he's getting his stick in passing lanes for takeaways or pressing out to create pressure, Schreiner was consistently disruptive.

Phillips first caught my attention at the IL Summer Derby, and he backed it up again at the New Balance All-America Games for Team Baltimore. One of the most vocal and animated defenders on the field, his energy translates directly into his play. Phillips is an aggressive, downhill defender who isn't shy about putting attackmen on the turf. He times his slides with precision and punishes players who try to press into high-traffic areas. In the clearing game, he's a vocal leader—commanding spacing and making sure his midfielders stretch and stay on sides. Phillips brings an edge and presence that makes him both a tone-setter on the field and a culture guy in the locker room.

When you see a defender standing 6'4", 210 pounds with great footwork, he should be immediately on your radar, and Brayden Boone fits that mold. Representing the Southwest, Boone stood out for his ability to apply pressure without overextending. He logged a caused turnover on man-down defense and consistently displayed high-level off-ball positioning and discipline. He moves well laterally, communicates through slide packages, and plays with the kind of physical presence that makes attackmen think twice before dodging into his space. Boone brings size, IQ, and edge—three traits that translate at the next level.

"Big, strong, intimidating"—those were the first words that landed in my notes watching Bunting at New Balance. He may not have the quickest feet, but he more than makes up for it with his sheer physicality and presence on the back end. Bunting excels at winning the body matchup; if you challenge him inside, expect to get planted. He also showed poise in the clearing game, where his stick skills stood out—confident on the carry and able to deliver sharp over-the-top outlets. Bunting plays with an edge that makes him a tone-setter on defense.
