Carey Smith | Prep Lacrosse Scout
This gifted LSM from Berkeley Prep in Florida kicked off UPenn’s 2028 recruiting class by committing to the Quakers’ program on September 9th. That announcement means the Quakers will bring in an athletic and fleet-footed pole who can impact a game at both ends of the field. This past spring, Watts recorded 25 goals, 10 assists, and 86 groundballs. Watts is a master at swiftly flipping turnovers and ground balls into scoring chances at the other end. With his elusive cutback moves and highly refined stick skills, Watts can carry the ball deep into the offensive end where he is a legitimate threat to crank a shot into the net. Watts thrives as a trail shooter on the fast break too. On defense, Watts wreaks havoc between the lines thanks to his ability to track down ball carriers and then use his aggressive stick to harass their hands. Watts also excels at sprinting out of the box, locating the ball, and then stopping the opposing team’s transition chance. In 6v6 action, Watts will press out on a ball carrier as far as midfield and disrupt the opposing team’s entire offense.

Watts was one of the most entertaining and dynamic defenders I saw this fall. He does a little bit of everything—home-run checks, toe drags, behind-the-backs, and letting it fly in transition. Even though his highlight tape is loaded with takeaway plays, he knows when to dial it back, settle in, and just flat-out play defense. What really stands out is how he hunts double teams and times his slides to force turnovers. He’s a vacuum on groundballs, using his pole well in scrums and showing great feel when toe-dragging his way out of traffic.
The most fun part of his game comes once he has the ball. Watts plays like an offensive player with a pole—comfortable with both hands and creative with his release points as a passer and shooter. He’s the kind of LSM who can change momentum quickly and is absolutely a name to know in the 2028 class for LSMs.
