Due to some adventurous camera work on the live stream, I’m not sure whether the UNC commit finished with five or six goals. Either way, he outscored Don Bosco by himself and was pretty much unstoppable on Thursday night. Plunkett recorded a natural hat trick between the second quarter and the nine-minute mark of the third stanza, and did so in style. Early on, he dodged against a Top 100 recruit and netted a jumper from the hash after coming off a pick, placing it perfectly between the goalie and the nearside pipe. Then, he made it appear as if he was going to sweep to his left before going to his right and netting a far-side shot from a low angle. He completed the hat trick on a backside cut and finished the aforementioned cross crease shovel pass in Haggerty. Later on, he tallied off the ride, on a 15-yard stepdown, and an empty-netter. In the past, I’ve viewed Plunkett as a volume shooter who needs the ball in his stick a lot to produce. On Thursday, I was rather impressed with his efficiency, which will serve him well in Chapel Hill once he joins an absolutely loaded offensive group.

Plunkett initially took his raw athleticism to the midfield position, not making the switch to attack until his freshman year of high school. However, his playing style highly reflects that, with the ability to execute long dodges, cover ground quickly, and fill in the gaps missing from his teammates. Plunkett has a fierce, competitive edge with a relentless drive to improve. The lefty has made rapid growth in recent years and looks to continue making an impact for his team.

Plunkett has been one of the more well-covered players since the launch of Prep Lacrosse, and for good reason, as he was utterly dominant in November, December, and January. At Showtime, he came out hot, posting a hat trick in each of his first two games. He scored some gorgeous nearside goals, a result of his confidence in his shooting stroke and ability to score from any angle. Plunkett is undoubtedly a volume shooter, but he does an incredible job of getting to high-percentage areas. For his All-Star Game hat trick, he drove hard with his left and clanked one in, finished a dip and dunk then got his third when he had his man hung up behind, faked, and finished in front.

Plunkett has turned heads at every stop as of late, and that’s probably an understatement, too. Highlighted at NAL and One Percent, the athletic left-hander produces with both substance and flare and has had very little trouble getting shots off, often making it look easy. Explosive with the rock and at his best when he’s above the cage, Plunkett simply knows how to get his spots and can hammer it from deep when the opportunity presents itself. He posted four goals in the All-Star Game and scored three of his team’s first six goals while providing a significant boost on the ride as well.

Posting four goals in the All-Star Game to lock down Offensive MVP honors from the One Percent crew, Plunkett was back at it down in Florida, having already been highlighted for his prowess at NAL earlier this fall. There’s no doubt that he’s a volume shooter and left-hand dominant, so while he needs to become more two-handed, he’s so confident with his left to the point that he’s not only willing to take low-angle shots with his stick to the outside but finishes them more often than not. Constantly getting a step on his man from the wings and up top, Plunkett has a nasty split dodge and gets so much power behind his jump shots when he sweeps across the top. Likely a middie at the next level, he did an outstanding job hiding his stick behind his body before the release and did so in the ASG before burying a low bouncer, one of two goals that went past Hunter Mezzatesta in the second half.
