John Fodor
About John
Expert Analysis
Niko Amato | Prep Lacrosse Scout
John Fodor brings a disruptive, athletic presence to the defensive end & projects to be a player ready to take on a larger role as the Green Wave reloads its back line. John is a well-rounded defender with the merit to become an absolute force. He consistently shows the ability to deter dodgers on-ball while remaining disciplined off it, filling creases & closing space with purpose. Fodor plays with an active but efficient stick, using timely pokes & lifts to disrupt ball carriers rather than relying on unnecessary flash. His size & natural talent show up between the lines as well, where he handles 50/50 ground balls cleanly & moves the ball upfield with confidence. John sees the field on the clear, he can break the ride when lanes open, & he is capable of pushing transition when defenses overextend. With key defensive pieces graduating, Fodor enters his junior season ready to step into a more integral role, establishing himself as a fixture in Delbarton’s defense. He is verbally committed to Johns Hopkins, rounding out what could become a strong package deal with the Fodor brothers — offering reliability, range, & impact on the defensive side of the ball.

Simply put, Fodor is a complete LSM. He possesses excellent speed, impressive length, a solid frame, and remarkable agility. Fodor can track offensive players on the perimeter or play a physical style of defense in close. He is a menacing on-ball defender with a knack for throwing heavy stick checks and crafty lifts. Fodor’s timely slides and double teams produced frequent turnovers too. Fodor also excelled at swooping in from the face off wing, picking up a ground ball and then leading the charge into the offensive end. His ability to distribute the rock at full speed was impressive. Fodor was a plus player in the clearing game too.

Fodor jumped off the page during the fall and winter circuits, and coming away from his sophomore season, I was impressed with how much more polished and confident he looks. Still a ‘baby giraffe’ type physically, he looks a tad more aggressive on-ball, continuing to show off his sound footwork and smart position play. He opened up the week with a bouncer in transition, and was excellent 1v1 throughout the camp. When someone gained a half step on him, he recovered appropriately and applied pressure to keep his matchup at bay, using his length to his advantage.

Though this is often the case for me when evaluating close defenders, I gained much more of an appreciation for Fodor’s skill set after seeing him the second time around this fall. His ranginess and athleticism stood out in November, but the more I watched BBL last weekend, the more I was impressed with his overall command of the defense, footwork, and off-ball prowess. Covering a lot of ground at all times while using his length to his advantage, he put himself in passing lanes and snagged a few clean nuggets out of the air. Fodor moves exceptionally well for a player his size, so he’s more than capable of limiting different types of attackmen. He can also bump up and cover up top, where he stripped one of the event’s most dominant middies and cleared upfield on Sunday.
