Carey Smith | Prep Lacrosse Scout
FitzGerald’s speed, solid frame, and non-stop motor combine to create an on-ball menace of a SSDM. His incredible agility and quick reactions enable FitzGerald to remain tight to a ball carrier despite numerous changes of direction. FitzGerald will use forceful body checks and stick checks as well as crow bars to create turnovers. Once the ball is on the ground, FitzGerald is quick to pounce and secure possession. As a team defender, he is extremely dependable. His slides, double teams and recoveries are always on point. FitzGerald’s constant communication with teammates enables him to get over and through screens with ease. Plus, Fitzgerald has a habit of knifing through passing lanes for steals. College coaches will also be intrigued with how poised FitzGerald remains when opposing teams attempt to put him on an island.

“Gamer” is the word that best describes Jake Fitzgerald. He’s the type of athlete who looks like he could excel at any sport in PE class, and that competitiveness translates directly to the field. With his blend of athleticism and skill, Fitzgerald finds ways to impact the game all over the place—and he should thrive when Team USA shifts into the Sixes format on Saturday and Sunday. Serving as one of the primary short-stick defensive midfielders for Team USA U17, Fitzgerald matches feet well and is physical enough to force dodgers to move the ball. He’s quick to ground balls, capable of being a one-man clear, and consistently makes plays in transition and between the lines. That energy and versatility should make him a key piece for Team USA throughout the Rivalry Challenge.
