About Hunter
Expert Analysis
Niko Amato | Prep Lacrosse Scout
A projected four-year starter for Yorktown and a returning team captain, Hunter Mezzatesta has already piled up 640+ career saves. He posted 171 saves (58.4%) as a freshman, 220 saves (64%) as a sophomore, and 250 saves as a junior in 2025 — numbers that reflect rare longevity, consistency, and growth inside one of New York’s most demanding pipelines in the Hudson Valley region.
Hunter plays with a calm command that settles the entire defense in front of him. Mechanically, Mezzatesta is sharp: quick top hand, strong rebound control, smooth level changes, and the ability to win possessions with athletic second efforts. In transition, he’s a natural playmaker who can trigger early offense with confident outlets.
Hunter’s national breakout came in an 11-10 victory against Santa Fe Christian (CA), where he snagged a clean save, sprinted the length of the field, and buried the game-winning goal — a clip that drew 200K+ views and highlighted his athleticism and feel for the moment.
A proven product with a real big-game goalie feel, Mezzatesta is signed to play at the University of Virginia, where his experience, toughness, and instincts should translate quickly in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Mezzatesta was a bonafide thief on his way to being named One Percent’s Defensive MVP for the second consecutive time. Showing out in the rain, he mirrored his Maverik Showtime ASG showing by making nine saves in stellar fashion while allowing just two goals, with both goals coming from Plunkett (though Mezzatesta stymied him multiple times, too). He was always up to the task and difficult to save, stealing a ton of would-be goals thanks to his disciplined footwork, angle play, and elite top-hand speed. Set to be a four-year starter for the Huskers, Mezzatesta almost always caught it cleanly, and when he didn’t, he got his big frame in the way to eat shots. Clearing the ball with poise, he got the ball up and out and was as steady as they come in all facets.
