Mapes is a fleet footed and well-built prospect with a high IQ and extremely polished defensive techniques. That list of assets enables Mapes to smother ball carriers 1v1 in space. Mapes owns solid footwork and tremendous discipline, so he excels at turning offensive prospects multiple times until they make a mistake. Then Mapes will unleash a powerful stick check or crafty lift to cause a turnover. Mapes can also work as an elite team defender where his slides and double teams generate turnovers. Plus, Mapes has demonstrated a knack for disrupting passing lanes with his stick. Once Mapes has secured the GB, he can lead transition opportunities or roll to open space and then fire a precise clearing pass to a teammate. In early December Mapes committed to Merrimack.
