2028 Commits: Five More Difference-Makers in New England

In the flurry of commitments over the last few weeks — or, in the case of service academy commits, months — it's easy to overlook some of the more influential players who have come off the board. Whether it's a game-changing drawman who can also score, a shot-stopper, or a versatile scorer, each of these players has landed at a program that should cater to their unique talents.    Having committed to Yale on the 17th, Pinardi terrorized the NHIAA last season. He was Pinkerton's most effective and consistent weapon, scoring five goals in the state title game for the Astros, which helped deliver a championship. He's very low to the ground and has incredible body control, which helps when taking draws, but also absorbing contact. The playbook on some face-off guys is to beat on them until they relent - that does not work on Pinardi, who is just as much of a threat with the ball after the draw as he is at winning the war of attrition that determines possessions. Is he an offensive middie that takes face-offs? The truth is that Pinardi is as close to that description as you can get.     Berglund is the most recent commit, having pledged his fealty to Michigan this week. His stock went through the roof this summer after a wildly successful campaign with 3d New England Red. Able to get his shot off in traffic and past unsuspecting goalies who think they can read his shot, Berglund is a menace every time you give him a modicum of space. His long strides are deceptively timed to get defenders to reach for checks, but Berglund's stick control is such that those poles are often hitting nothing but air. Berglund doesn't get down the alley; he creates the alley. He's the kind of dodger that is earmarked for success in the Big 10.     A service academy commit, Franssen has been off the board to Air Force since late July. Before that, he was widely regarded as one of the best face-off prospects in the Lakes Region. This summer, Franssen impressed at Maverik Showtime, making the All-Star roster where he toughed out several draws that he ended up winning with technique and power. He has exceptional balance and knows how to leverage his opponents' weight so well that they often find themselves coughing up turf pellets when they slip off his shoulder and crash to the earth. He might end up being the steal of this entire class at the face-off position.     Proving the point that goalies come off the board in runs, Colclasure is a goaltender with a high ceiling headed to ACC power Syracuse. When you compare him to other goalie prospects, you see the other side of the spectrum in terms of effective tendencies. While other keepers are measured and prepped for each attempt, Colclasure has an explosive reaction to every shot, throwing his entire body into the way of the ball to stop it from going into the net, but somehow retains rebound control even after spectacular sprawls. He's also methodical with his outlets and doesn't rush the ball, which helps set up attacks with more organization than flair; a deep contrast to his shot-stopping, but a combination that works for the college game.     Another service academy commit, Taylor committed to Army back in July. The Maine native knows how to get to the front of the cage and is a threat from either side of the cage because he is as ambidextrous as an attackman can get. He might project as a midfielder at the college level because he can also ride the ball back and isn't afraid to soak a slide or three on his way to the net. Taylor is one of those players who makes things look relatively easy because he is consistently making the right read. That's not a surprise to anyone who saw him evolve into a two-handed hammer thrower with the decision-making capabilities of a much older player.
