Building on Tradition: Wilton's Goals and Expectations

Lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America. Its history dates back to 1100 AD and is rich in tradition. Among high school programs, Wilton lacrosse is noted for its remarkable legacy and contributions to the sport.   In 1958, Dan Cappal, a former player under legendary coach Milt Roberts at the University of Delaware, introduced the game to his science students at Wilton High School. Cappal and his students purchased wooden sticks and began throwing the ball around on a field outside of school. Al Dobsevage, a Wilton High School Latin teacher and former lacrosse player, soon supported and helped establish the program. In 1965, Wilton fielded its first team and played its first home game against New Canaan Country Day.    Since then, Wilton lacrosse has produced countless legends, including:   <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>Mike Pressler (Wilton '78) – Played at Washington & Lee; former head coach at Ohio Wesleyan, Duke, and Bryant</li>   <li>John Wiseman (Wilton '86) - Played at Duke and served as Wilton Varsity head coach for 10 years and assistant coach for 2 years</li>   <li>Chris Skillin (Wilton '87) – Played at Ohio Wesleyan</li>   <li>Kevin Wall (Wilton '88) – Played at Ohio Wesleyan</li>   <li>JR Sherman (Wilton '88) – Played at Boston College</li>   <li>Andy Flick (Wilton '96) – Played at Georgetown</li>   <li>Ray Erickson (Wilton '98) – Played at Loyola</li>   <li>Vinnie Cannon (Wilton '09) – Played at Siena</li> </ul>   But Wilton lacrosse isn't just defined by its past. With a thriving youth program, a strong alumni network, and dedicated boosters, the program continues to build toward an even brighter future.   Wilton wrapped up the 2024 lacrosse season with a record of 9-10, falling short of expectations with quarterfinal exits in both the FCIAC and State tournaments. The season had its highs and lows, with a promising six-game winning streak following some early losses. However, the Warriors struggled to maintain momentum, encountering a losing stretch that derailed their campaign. Injuries contributed to the team's struggles, exposing a lack of depth and inexperience, areas the team has worked hard to address in the offseason. The offseason has been productive, with the team working hard to regain Wilton's historical standard of excellence. The captains and other senior and junior leaders have set the tone, fostering a competitive and motivated environment. Many players are multi-sport athletes, with 35% participating in winter sports and 70% engaged in fall sports. This level of commitment bodes well for the upcoming season. As always, Wilton aims to compete in the FCIAC and State Championships. The Warriors' demanding schedule, featuring Tier I FCIAC opponents and tough out-of-conference matchups, will ensure they are battle-tested when playoffs arrive. The team has once again opted into the top Class LL division for the state tournament, reaffirming their commitment to competing at the highest level.   <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Standout Upperclassmen </h3>   <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Top Seniors</h4>   <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>[player_tooltip player_id='124947' first='Jack' last='Schwartz'] (D) – Committed to Loyola - A fundamentally sound defender, he excels at shutting down the opposing team's top player with his elite footwork and high defensive IQ. His discipline and positioning make him a reliable anchor on the defensive end.</li>   <li>[player_tooltip player_id='124950' first='Joey' last='Hagerty'] (M/A) – Committed to Colby - As a Wilton varsity football quarterback, he possesses outstanding vision, allowing him to distribute the ball effectively and create scoring opportunities. Additionally, he is a skilled finisher, making him a dual threat on offense.</li>   <li>[player_tooltip player_id='124952' first='Connor' last='Buchichio'] (M) – One of the top uncommitted seniors in the FCIAC, prioritizing academics at a top university.</li>   <li>[player_tooltip player_id='124954' first='Cael' last='Dexter'] (M) – Committed to Union (for football) - A tall and fundamentally sound midfielder, he possesses a powerful outside shot, making him a constant scoring threat from a distance. As a wide receiver for the Wilton varsity football team, he utilizes his athleticism, field awareness, and strong hands to excel in transition and create offensive opportunities.</li> </ul>   <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Committed Juniors</h4>   <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>Charlie Calabrese (A) – Committed to Army - Calabrese is a slick and shifty attackman known for his elite footwork, speed, and ability to break down defenders. A lethal shooter with a quick release, he is a constant offensive threat who can create his own shot or set up teammates with precision.</li>   <li>Connor McAndrews (A) – Committed to Vermont - McAndrews is a highly skilled and fundamentally sound attackman. Known for his lacrosse IQ, precise finishing, and ability to create opportunities for his teammates, he is a key offensive weapon who consistently makes smart plays and capitalizes on scoring chances.</li> </ul>   Wilton enters the season with a strong offensive core and a determined mindset. Many current seniors and juniors were part of the 2023 FCIAC Championship team, giving them valuable experience and a taste of success. While the defense will have some new faces, the talent and commitment are there to step into key roles. Above all, this team is hungry to prove itself and make an impact. The captains and senior leaders play a key role in ensuring every player buys into their role and contributes to the team's overall success. Wilton returns the same coaching staff from last season, marking the third consecutive year with the same varsity coaching group. This continuity should provide stability and allow for continued player development.   Wilton faces a rigorous schedule, competing against some of the top teams in the region. Under the leadership of head coach Steve Pearsall, the Warriors benefit from a fantastic coach who brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and strong leadership to the program. His ability to develop players and foster a competitive, team-first culture has been instrumental in Wilton's continued success. With a challenging schedule, a strong commitment to team chemistry, and a rich program history, the Warriors are poised to compete again at the highest level. The focus remains on steady improvement, and if the team can reach its full potential, Wilton will be a formidable contender in the FCIAC and State tournaments.    Galligan is a talented and confident goalie who has continued to elevate his game year-round. After earning the starting job as a sophomore, he has only grown stronger, showcasing his sharp instincts and composure in the cage. A strong ball stopper with a high lacrosse IQ, Trevor reads the game exceptionally well and makes smart decisions under pressure. His ability to play aggressively outside the crease adds another dimension to his game, making him a dynamic presence in goal. With a standout summer and impressive performances throughout the fall and winter, he is a rising prospect to watch.     Padilla is a highly athletic LSM with great speed and strong stick skills, making him a disruptive force between the lines. Despite a smaller frame, his quickness and agility—honed as a punt returner on the football field—allow him to excel in transition and on-ground balls. He steps into a significant role following Conner Flanagan's departure to Utah, but his energy and work ethic position him well to make an impact. With his ability to push the pace and play tough defense, Jake is a rising prospect with plenty of upside.     Viggiano is a dynamic and versatile offensive threat who can excel at midfield and attack. A rare freshman starter, he possesses strong skills, good size, and the athleticism to impact the game in multiple ways. His high lacrosse IQ and vision make him a playmaker, whether dodging from X as an attackman or creating opportunities from up top as a midfielder. His two-way ability adds tremendous value, allowing him to contribute on both ends of the field. With his skill set and adaptability, Will is a standout prospect with a bright future.     Smith is a talented and evolving midfielder who made an impact as a face-off specialist on varsity as a freshman. Now expanding his role as an offensive playmaker, he continues to showcase his versatility and skill set. His ability to win possessions at the X and his growing offensive presence make him a valuable asset in transition and settled play. With his work ethic and development, Liam is shaping into a well-rounded midfielder with a high ceiling.
