Key Performances from Fresh Coast's Summer Showdown

Fresh Coast Tournaments hosted the Summer Showdown in Saint Joseph, Michigan on July 13th and 14th. The event featured teams from the Midwest, with many top performers hailing from the Great Lake State. Notably, West Michigan Lacrosse and West Side demonstrated the depth of their rosters during the tournament.    Grajewski was a matchup problem for many of the defenders he came into contact with. He had a powerful and accurate shot and was able to score while on the move. His physical dodging style and quick shooting ability within tight spaces made him very effective on the offensive end for WM Lax and very tough to guard. He scored multiple goals in both the games I watched.     Vale was a contributor on a busy offense, showcasing a blistering step down shot and smooth skills on the field. He was patient when shooting, taking every extra step available to him on outside looks and ensuring to make the shot count whenever he had the chance. When carrying the ball, he absorbed contact well and displayed a high lacrosse IQ.     Over the weekend, Ambrose showcased his scoring and playmaking abilities. He skillfully evaded defenders by using roll dodges around goal line extended to create scoring opportunities while also protecting the ball. With quick decision-making, he was a threat to either score off a dodge or assist an open teammate.     Ciolek dominated the faceoff matchups I watched this weekend with his quick clamp and leveraging his size and strength. He provided his team with numerous extra possessions by quickly winning the ball and initiating fast breaks. He's got speed and runs through contact.     I've been watching Kovarik play a lot this summer, and this was the most impactful he has been. When dodging around the bottom half of the field, he consistently kept his head up, looking for open players on the backside. This ended up opening up the field in front of him, giving him chances to get his hands free on the left side. He used both hands fluently and was able to take advantage of open opportunities.     Spear performed well in this tournament, making some impressive saves within five yards and looking sharp against shots from the outside. He demonstrated quick hands and an equally fast step, as well as good field awareness, showing strong leadership on defense. In one particular instance, he made three saves in close range and off rebounds during a broken clear. He also makes accurate passes at range.     During the tournament, VanHeukelum stood out as an enthusiastic defender who actively made plays on the field. He demonstrated quick feet, solid stick skills, and was able to absorb contact while carrying the ball. He was also proactive in pressuring the players he defended, and displayed a calculated and well-timed approach to making checks.     I was most impressed by Weber's speed and agility on the field. He was able to outrun many players. He is also a skilled dodger and can effectively move through contact when clearing the ball. Additionally, he demonstrates good ball protection and keeps his eyes up while dodging, often finding an open teammate after dodging past defenders.
